Lucinda lifted her chin when she heard Mr. Norwood's words, her whole posture screaming with pride. She looked like she was finally getting her moment in the spotlight. Lydia was being investigated, her spotless record finally tarnished, and honestly, Lucinda couldn’t have looked more thrilled. At last, she’d managed to outshine Lydia for once.
Blake shot Mr. Norwood a disapproving look. “Grandpa, what are you so mixed up about this time? They just came to check out Lydia’s background. She’s back safe, nothing bad happened, so clearly she didn’t do anything wrong.”
Mr. Norwood was left startled for a second, but he quickly recovered. “Whether she did something wrong or not, only she knows the truth. I just hope she isn’t hiding anything from us that could drag down the whole Norwood family and embarrass us all.”
“Dad, what could Lydia have possibly done?” Cameron finally snapped. “What’s gotten into you lately?”
This whole week, Mr. Norwood had been making everyone’s lives difficult. At first, they’d chalked it up to his injured foot and being stuck in the house, but now it was starting to feel like maybe he’d hit his head too when he fell. The things he was saying now were even worse than when Lydia first came back to the Norwood family.
As everyone scolded him, Mr. Norwood’s face twisted into an expression of wounded drama.
“Well, well. She’s the one who made a mistake, and as her grandfather, I can’t say a single word? You all rush to protect her, but now I’m suddenly the villain? You’re just tired of having an old cripple under your roof. I’m just a burden now, right? If you don’t want me here, then send me back to my old house in North City. Let me fend for myself. Just let me rot alone.”
He finished his outburst and angrily wheeled himself away toward his room.
Cameron could only sigh in defeat. No one really knew what to say after that.
Lydia just smiled, unfazed. “It really doesn’t bother me. It was just a standard investigation, no big deal.”
Blake waited until the servants had left before turning to Lydia. “Lydia, I heard Uncle William got questioned too. Were you two together?”
Cameron and Kylie looked at Blake in surprise. They hadn’t heard about that.
Lydia’s lips quirked up. “Blake, you really are the best at sniffing out news.”
