Jackson nodded. “Okay. I’ll remind them.”
Mandy finally relaxed. So it really was his people behind all this.
“That’s good. Jackson, there’s something else I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Sure. What is it?”
“It’s about William. I mean he’s getting promoted to Minister of Foreign Affairs. You know how things are with Benjamin and the Robinson family. Maybe you could help out, say a word, and get him transferred to another department?”
Jackson had already heard about William’s promotion earlier that day. His intention had been to pull William and the Norwood family over to his side, while also making things awkward for Connor. That was why he’d gone to see Lydia in person.
He hadn’t expected things to turn out quite like this.
Still, Jackson had never failed at anything he set his mind to.
“I’m still new in this position and don’t really know the other departments yet. Besides, William is his own brother-in-law. What could he really do to him? Just tell him to keep his head down and do his job. We can talk about a transfer some other time.”
Benjamin, who’d been listening in with hope written all over his face, suddenly felt like the ground had dropped out from under him.
Mandy heard Jackson’s answer and realized she couldn’t push any further, so she nodded. “Alright. We’ll wait and see.”
When she hung up, Benjamin stared at her in disbelief. “You just hung up? You didn’t even try to argue for me?”
Mandy sighed, sounding tired. “You heard what he said. What else do you want me to do?”
“So what am I supposed to do?” Benjamin was so anxious he looked like he might start pacing holes in the floor.
Mandy looked at him, exasperated. “You’re his brother-in-law. What’s the worst he could do to you? Just do your job properly. He’s not going to make up problems just to get you into trouble.”
Aiden was just as angry. “Boss, he’s such a pain. He’s always trying to one-up you. You never should have saved him back then, let alone promoted him to your adjutant.”
Connor took a slow, tense breath. “He saved my life, I saved his. We were even. But now that he’s set his sights on Lydia, I won’t be so nice anymore.”
He remembered how he’d been the one to bring Jackson up in the first place, making him his adjutant. Later, they’d ended up equals. Then, while Connor was recovering from an injury and forced to retire, Jackson swooped in, took the credit, and climbed to lieutenant general. Now he was a full general. His whole rise was built on Connor’s back.
No one was more shameless.
Garrett, after a moment, said quietly, “Don’t worry. Lydia’s not the type to fall for that.” Even if Jackson tried to impress her, she wouldn’t give him the time of day.
Connor felt a little better hearing that. “You’re right. Lydia didn’t even spare him a glance. Pathetic!”
Iceblade was suddenly a little uncomfortable. That last comment hit a nerve.
