No one had pushed him.
Still, something felt off.
Lydia zoomed in on the security footage. As her grandfather stepped out from under the flower-covered arch, Frank lowered his head politely. But there was a flash of smugness on his lips, like he knew something no one else did.
Lydia’s gut told her Frank was involved somehow. But how? Did he put something slippery on the ground? Slip something into Grandpa’s shoes? She played the video over and over, but none of her guesses quite fit.
On the footage, Grandpa paused, raised his hand to his head, almost like he felt dizzy. Before he could even touch his temple, his body wobbled, and he went down hard.
Maybe he really just lost his balance. But after seeing Frank’s little smirk, Lydia couldn’t let it go. She pulled up the footage from every possible angle, searching for any other clues.
Ten minutes later, she left her room and headed outside.
The Norwood family garden was huge, filled with flowers and plants from all over the world. You could get lost in it if you weren’t careful. At the spot where Grandpa had fallen, Kylie and Cameron were scolding the two maids assigned to watch over him.
“You’re supposed to be with him at all times. Why didn’t you help him when he walked down the steps?”
“If you couldn’t support him, you should have at least reminded him to watch his step.”
“He fell and neither of you were there. The gardener had to help him up and call for help.”
The maids looked terrified. Their faces were pale as paper. “Sir, Madam, we’re so sorry. We’ll be more careful from now on.”
Frank’s heart jumped into his throat the moment he heard Lydia.
He kept his head down, hoping to disappear.
Kylie and Cameron turned to Lydia. “We thought the same thing, but we checked and couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary. Lydia, maybe your grandfather really just slipped.”
Lydia said, “Who was with him when he fell?”
Kylie replied, “The gardener was nearby. He was the one who helped your grandfather and called for help.”
Lydia looked at Frank, her gaze lingering. “Our new gardener… why does he look so familiar?”
