Lydia’s brows drew together.
Sandy was pregnant?
“What did you say? I... I...” Sandy’s eyes fluttered open. She was groggy, but the news jolted her and she struggled to focus on the doctor.
“You’re pregnant. But right now, your pregnancy isn’t stable.”
There was no question who the father was. The baby belonged to Greg.
Greg might be older, powerful in his own right, but he’d never had kids. Ever since he got together with Sandy, he hadn’t bothered with protection. If anything, he seemed to want her to get pregnant.
He probably never thought it would actually happen.
Sandy’s feelings, though, were a mess. She loved the luxury Greg showered her with, but part of her couldn’t stand that he was old and, in her eyes, not worthy of her. And now he’d left her behind. This baby...
She’d always assumed her body wasn’t healthy enough to get pregnant easily.
“Do you want to keep it?” the doctor asked.
Lydia paused, then looked at Sandy, making it clear the choice was hers and hers alone.
Sandy’s nerves were shot. She stared at Lydia, her voice shaking. “Lydia! What are you trying to do to my baby?”
Lydia frowned. “The baby is inside you. What could I possibly do? Honestly, Sandy, you should be grateful. This baby couldn’t have come at a better time.”
With this lifeline, Sandy’s confidence soared. She was already planning ahead. No matter if she had a boy or a girl, this would be Greg’s only child. One day, everything Greg owned would belong to her and her baby.
“Sandy, you need to cooperate. If you get worked up and something happens to the baby, that’s on you.” Lydia’s warning was sharp before Sandy was taken back to her home country.
Lydia and Connor still needed to go to Country T to pick up Luke. They wouldn’t be heading back with Sandy.
Sandy, clutching her stomach protectively, looked at Lydia. “You’re not coming back yet?” She couldn’t help but wonder if they were still after Greg. She didn’t want Greg to get caught. She was counting on him to save her, to help her make a comeback.
Lydia’s answer was calm. “We have to get Luke.”
Sandy’s eyes widened. “But... isn’t he dead?”
