Not wanting to further burden them at a time like this, Maison then nodded before saying, “Don’t worry, Aunt. I’m a strong boy…”
Though he said that, it was clear that all this was negatively affecting Maison’s mental health. With that in mind, Xavia simply stroked his hair, hoping to cheer the boy up.
Soon enough, Zivon managed to light a fire on one of their backpacks. As the backpack caught fire, little by little, the makeshift campfire began illuminating the pit. Most importantly of all, however, was the fact that it was warm…
With the fire lit, Xavia quickly carried Maison closer to it. Following that, she took his shoes off and placed them next to the fire, just in case they needed something else to burn later. As for why she took the shoes off first, it was to keep the boy’s soles warm. That way, she could decrease the likelihood of him catching a cold…
Either way, after placing the boy’s feet close to the fire—and removing her own shoes—, Xavia pointed toward the wall before saying, “Hey, Maison… Look there.”
Looking up, Maison was quickly greeted by the sight of a ‘pigeon’ shadow puppet. Naturally, the one making the shadow was Xavia. Still, it was enough to catch Maison’s attention, prompting the boy to say, “…That looks fun… Could you teach me how to do that, Aunt? I want to play too!”
“It’s really simple! All you need to do is place the back of your hand atop your other palm and cross your thumbs together. Following that, all you need to do is move the remaining eight fingers like butterfly wings. The shadow formed will be in the shape of a flying dove!”
“…You’re right! I’m doing it too! I’m glad you taught me, Aunt!” exclaimed Maison as his crisp and heart-warming laughter filled the pit.
Hearing his son’s laughter, Zivon was prompted to look at Xavia’s bright eyes… and eventually, even his gaze softened. If any other woman was trapped in this situation, they’d surely be crying in his arms. However, Xavia was clearly unlike most women. Instead of allowing herself to get afraid, she was actually keeping Maison busy so that he’d feel better. To be able to put others first in such a desperate situation… What a strong and self-reliant woman…
Shaking the thought off, Zivon then looked up, hoping that someone would catch a glimpse of the smoke and rescue them already… The last thing he wanted was for something to happen to Maison or Xavia.
Little did Zivon know that the freezing land above was pitch black. About a hundred miles away, there was even a warning sign that stated, ‘Road ahead closed. Take a detour!’
Realizing that he had phrased that badly, the secretary quickly added, “…I apologize for saying it that way. Basically, I was trying to say that it’ll all be over for Young Master Zivon this time…”
After all, not only had Zivon been unfaithful to his wife, but the person he had fallen for was none other than his wife’s younger sister! Such earth-shattering information would surely ruin Zivon once and for all! It certainly helped that people these days favored those with high morals...
“…Speaking of which, nothing will happen to Young Master Zivon and his son, right…?” asked the secretary, knowing that the two were extremely precious to the Burtons. With that in mind, if something were to happen to them, it was going to be exceedingly difficult for them to escape responsibility.
Upon hearing that, Keith stopped swirling his wine before replying, “What do you think? Though whether or not something happens to them depends on God’s will…”
…Huh? Then… that meant…
