Chapter 91
“Daisy’s a huge celebrity, isn’t she? Do you think she’s strapped for cash?” Ryan asked.
“Well, every penny counts,” Cassandra replied.
Hearing that, he teasingly said, “Damn. She must be your true love, huh? You’re even willing to burn bridges with Cameron just to keep her past under wraps…”
Cassandra froze. “What did you just say?”
Realizing he had let something slip, Ryan quickly changed the subject. “Alright, alright, I’ll waive the fee. It’s just a couple of bucks, and I’m not that stingy. Anyway, let’s stop by the grocery store on our way back and get some groceries. We can cook for the dogs tomorrow.”
But Cassandra couldn’t shake the unease in her heart. What happened that night was a secret she had buried deep within.
She trusted Javier and was sure that he had no ties to Ryan. There was no reason he would tell him, and Daisy would never speak of it either. So, how did Ryan know?
The more she thought about it, the more she felt that Ryan wasn’t as carefree and flippant as he appeared. He knew far more than he let on.
“Mr. Scott, is there something you’re not telling me?” she asked.
Ryan shrugged casually. “What could I possibly know?”
He didn’t want to say more, and Cassandra didn’t press any further. She simply said, “Let’s go, If we wait any longer, the grocery store’s going to close.”
But he stopped her. “Let’s watch the fireworks a little longer. There’s still time.”
“A grown man like you is into fireworks?” Cassandra asked, amused.
Ryan raised a brow. “Can’t a man enjoy some fireworks, too?”
“Okay, okay. You’re the boss–you call the shots.
With that, Cassandra sat down on the steps. While these heels were more comfortable than the ones she had bought herself, they still left her legs aching.
Besides, the river breeze was cold. She pulled a dog into her arms to be her furry hot water
With a click, that serene, beautiful moment was captured in a photo.
Ryan looked at the image on his phone and smiled in satisfaction. Then, he set it as his lock
screen.
Peaceful times and a quiet life–this moment was something he had imagined countless times.
