Everything before her was white, but it wasn’t the white of a wedding dress. It was the stark white of hospital nurses‘ uniforms.
A nurse was doing her rounds. Seeing Annabelles frightened expression, she asked gently,” Ms. Green, did you have a nightmare?”
Annabelle nodded and, utterly drained, lay back down on her pillow.
Why would she dream about that dog?
Could vengeful spirits really exist in this world, coming back for revenge?
No. Surely not.
It was Simon who had poisoned the treats, and it was Cameron who had fed them to Snowball.
She hadn’t actually done anything. She’d only mentioned it on the phone to Grace.
She hadn’t held a knife to anyone’s throat or forced anyone to carry it out.
It had nothing to do with her.
Just then, the nurse spotted Cameron coming in. “Mr. Dorsey, you’re just in time. Your wife was startled awake by a nightmare. Do go and comfort her.”
The nurse greeted him with a smile, but Cameron’s expression remained grim.
Annabelle saw his expression and immediately knew that things weren’t good. She shrank down under the covers and mumbled softly, “Cam…”
Cameron dragged a chair over and sat down at her bedside, crossing his legs and staring straight at her.
His
gaze unsettled Annabelle completely. “Don’t look at me like that. You’re scaring me.” He called her name. “Annabelle.”
“What?”
His voice was strangely calm, but it carried an icy, bone–chilling edge. “I’ve scheduled your operation for today. They’ll be along soon to take you to the operating room.”
“Operation? What operation?”
“An abortion.”
Annabelle’s eyes flew wide open, and she sat bolt upright. “You want to get rid of my baby?”
Cameron took a deep breath. “I’ll give you a cheque. You can write whatever amount you want. It’ll cover your parents‘ retirement and your brother’s gambling debts. You’ll even have
money left for yourself. I can arrange for you to study abroad if you wish.”
“I don’t want that! This baby is my life! I could never go through with an abortion!”
“Annabelle, I’m telling you this, not discussing it with you.”
She was stunned.
“Cam, how can you be this heartless? I’m carrying your baby!”
He was silent for a moment, then said, “If there’s anything else you want, so long as it’s not outrageous, I’ll do my best to make it happen.”
Annabelle stared at him in disbelief. “Did Ms. Blake tell you to do this?”
Cameron’s head snapped up. “This has nothing to do with her! Don’t drag her into this! She’s done absolutely nothing wrong!”
“So, you’re still defending her.”
“She’s my wife. Of course, I’ll defend her.”
Annabelle found it laughable. “Is this the first day you’ve had a wife? When you were flirting and carrying on with me, did you ever remember that you already had a wife?”
Cameron said coldly, “That’s between Cassie and me, and we’ll sort it out ourselves. It’s none of your concern.”
“But now, you’re trying to take my baby away from me!”
“As I said, I’ll compensate you. And I’ve arranged the top gynaecologist for the operation. You’ll still have a good chance of having children naturally if you want to marry in the future.”
