Shania approached Cherie and stared directly at her as she asked in a clear tone, "Hey Cherie, when was the first time you met Little Bean Sprout?"
"Few months ago. Back then at… Capital City University a day before their hundredth year anniversary celebration. I… I met her then on campus."
Shania said, "Do you still remember your second encounter with her?"
Cherie tried her best to recall as she replied in a slightly slurred tone, "I… when I went for a shoot at a recording studio."
Shania asked, "But Little Bean Sprout is a kid. How could she possibly even enter the recording studio anyway? Also, how could she be in university in the first place?"
"Perhaps... Little Bean Sprout's mother works there."
"But why would Little Bean Sprout's mother appear in Capital City University when she is the crew for the studio?"
Cherie had an empty look and seemed a little defeated as she said, "I… I don't know."
Shania stared at her helplessly dazed look and baited her patiently as she asked, "Hey Cherie, Little Bean Sprout aren't in these videos, so why can't everyone else see her and you're the only one who can?"
Cherie was speechless as she shook her head while sitting on the wheelchair in her plain blue patient's attire.
The instant she looked up, she noticed Little Bean Sprout standing at the corner of the patient's ward. She was carrying her little red backpack while staring at her.
Shania glanced at the direction of her gaze and looked toward the empty corner. She asked, "What are you looking at Cherie? Is Little Bean Sprout over there?"
Cherie focused her gaze on that corner as she nodded her pale little face.
Shania asked, "Cherie, this is a hospital and not to mention, a patient's ward even. Aside from doctors and patients, no one else is permitted to enter. How can a child like Little Bean Sprout even come in here? Cherie, doesn't it feel off to you?"
All Cherie did was shake her head. She was unable to answer.
Shania recalled that Boyle told her that Little Bean Sprout was seven years old.
Shania asked, "Cherie, Little Bean Sprout is only seven, right?"
Cherie nodded.
Shania probed deeper, "Well, since she's seven, why isn't she in school and instead here in North City? How could she possibly know where your hospital is? Cherie, today isn't a weekend, today is still a work day. Why isn't Little Bean Sprout like other children in school then?"
Cherie was in a slow daze. However, after a good long while, she was unable to answer Shania's relentless questioning. She was unable to understand anything as she shook her head.
Upon noticing that Shania was not going to get any answers from Cherie and since the patient clearly seemed exhausted, she decided to stop the treatment for now and had another medical staff wheel Cherie back to her room.
The other assistant doctors said, "Miss Fudd's case seems really tricky."
Shania sighed and said, "The patient herself isn't even aware that she's hallucinating. It seems that her cognitive mind is completely in a mess."
"We still aren't able to get any definitive conclusions from the patient. Her treatment is a complete mess now."
Shania pursed her lips and remained silent for a brief moment to think before saying, "I'm going to have a meeting with the patient's family."
Boyle had been keeping Cherie's condition a secret all this time. Shania was certain that Boyle had never come clean with everything between Cherie and him.
…
Boyle was standing outside of the patient's ward as he stared at Cherie who was sitting inside of the ward alone.
Her gaze looked lifeless and empty.
When a nurse came over with some medicine, she noticed Boyle who was standing by the patient's ward. She could not help but to remind him, "President Lawson, you really shouldn't be standing here. Chancellor Shania has told everyone about it. If Miss Fudd was to see you, it would be bad for her treatment."
Boyle's eyes reddened slightly as he stared at the haggard woman. He could not bring himself to say anything.
Upon noticing his silence, the nurse could not help but say, "President Lawson… please cooperate with us. If you keep this up, Chancellor Shania will blame us for it."
Boyle took a deep breath, took a glance at his watch and said, "Please let me watch over her for ten minutes. I promise that she won't see me, alright?"
The nurse was stunned as she did not expect someone this arrogant and prideful would beg a nurse like her.
The nurse stopped bothering him as she continued carrying the medicine into the room.
The instant the room opened, Cherie struggled slowly to turn her head over to the door. This made Boyle step away, preventing her from noticing him outside.
After the nurse entered, she told Cherie in a gentle tone, "Time for your meds, Cherie."
The nurse was stunned before cracking a polite smile at her as she said, "You will recover. When you do, you won't have to take these meds anymore."
Boyle was standing outside the door. He clenched his fists so hard that his fingertips turned pale.
He was tearing up.
After Shania was done with her lunch, she walked over in her white lab coat and was about to check up on Cherie's condition.
She ran into Boyle by the entrance.
Shania tucked both hands into her white lab coat as she said, "Based on Cherie's current state, she needs to stay at least half a year in the hospital to recover. Are you really going to stand here all day without moving an inch just to watch over her?"
Boyle's throat twitched as he spoke in a deep voice, "Everyday. I'll watch over her for an hour everyday."
Shania said, "Ten minutes. No more, no less. It'll not be helpful for her treatment if you stand here. If Cherie spots you, are you really sure that you'll be able to stop yourself from entering and meeting her?"
Boyle's throat twitched as he took a glance at how helpless Cherie seemed. He asked with a frown, "She was still able to move quite well on her own before she was admitted. Why can't she even unwrap a single piece of candy after she received treatment?"
Shania observed the patient in the room and explained, "Medications that are used to treat psychological disorders work by inhibiting neurotransmitters. When that happens, her cognitive ability will be reduced and dulled temporarily which is why she will find her movements sluggish."
Boyle felt awful as he stared at the woman inside with a painful gaze. He asked, "Will this persist?"
"She's being placed on a higher dose of medication for now. When her condition improves or when she is finally aware of her condition, we will reduce her dosage accordingly. When that happens, she won't be as sluggish and unresponsive anymore. As long as she recovers and isn't required to take her meds, her symptoms will stop."
Boyle closed his eyes as he could not bear to watch.
Shania comforted him, "The pain you see now is only temporary. As long as she cooperates and realizes that Little Bean Sprout is a product of her own hallucination and finally being aware of reality, all of her painful struggles will stop as well."
"However, let's have a serious talk, Boyle."
Boyle asked, "Talk about what?"
"Let's talk about who Little Bean Sprout is and the things I don't know about between you and Cherie."
