The black Bentley was driving at a steady pace on the road.
Streaks of lights flashed across the window as they drove.
Boyle asked with a smile, "Why'd you return home so suddenly? Will you still return to the United States?"
Cherie did not even look at him as she replied while focusing on the road in front of them, "I came back because I wanted to."
She was basically telling him that her life was none of his business.
"Huntley is going to marry Whitney soon," said Boyle.
"I know."
Boyle said, "I was also in the United States in the last seven years."
Cherie replied, "I know."
"I was studying for my doctorate degree at Harvard back then."
"I know."
"I miss you."
"I know… I don't know."
Cherie bit her tongue.
It was only then that she realized she had fallen into his trap.
She used to play games like this all the time with Whitney when she was in high school. This game was made to use a person's habits against them. It was usually played with a few no-brainer questions before catching the victim off-guard with a sudden unrelated question just to humiliate them.
Usually, the final question would be something like 'You're a pig,' and the other person would reply with 'yes' or 'I know' by instinct.
She had never lost once the game because of how fast her brain worked.
However, she was not paying attention earlier because the person sitting next to her was none other than Boyle whom she had not met for the last seven years.
Her brain had seemingly lost complete control of itself.
A dim glint flashed across Boyle's eyes as he spoke in a deep voice, "Do you know that I missed you dearly?"
Cherie immediately stared at him as she took a deep breath and mocked him, "So what if I did or didn’t? What do you want from me? Boyle, should I remind you that we broke up seven years ago?"
Telling her that he missed her was pointless.
She truly had grown up and become mature. However, due to how deep of an impact she had on him and how much he loved her, he could not bring himself to let go of his feelings toward her.
His love for her was deeply-rooted in his heart.
After that volatile comment from her, the remaining journey was driven in deafening silence.
He did not wish to continue triggering and agitating her.
Just as the black Bentley was about to arrive at the Fudd family home, Cherie exclaimed coldly, "Drop me off here. I can walk home from here."
When she realized that Boyle was not stopping, she exclaimed in a very stern manner, "You know my parents absolutely hate your guts and I won’t ever hurt my parents for you ever again."
It was not worth it.
The way she uttered the word 'hate' sounded very cold and heartless. She made no attempts to keep it subtle.
Her gaze was incredibly cold as well.
Boyle stopped the car.
She seemed very desperate to get out of the small space and immediately opened the car door after it stopped moving.
Tears started pouring out of her eyes as she desperately tried to wipe them away. She sobbed and said, "I’m all grown up now, Boyle. I’ll never allow you to bully me in my own world anymore and will never fall for you ever again."
Boyle's heart wrenched painfully as he watched her cry. He desperately wanted to hug her but he did not dare to move an inch closer to her because he knew doing so would only force her further away.
A storm was also raging in Boyle's heart as he was overwhelmed with immense sorrow.
Cherie took a deep breath and held back her sobbing voice as she said, "Let's end it here, Boyle. We shouldn't have met. I hope this is the last time I ever see you again."
The instant she finished saying that, she opened the door and took his coat off before returning it to him as she left without looking back.
Boyle stared at her silhouette from his car. His gaze looked lifeless.
She truly had grown up and it seemed she would never fall for him ever again.
However, he was unable to stop himself from sinking deeper into the intense and strong feelings he had for her.
…
Cherie calmed herself down when she arrived at the Fudd family home’s main entrance. She did not wish to allow her family to see how much of a mess she was at that moment. She also did not want her family to know that she had run into Boyle again.
Boyle's name had become a forbidden word in her family during the past few years.
Boyle had also been completely blacklisted in Cherie's heart. She had once tried to confront her trauma head-on in order to get better. However, it seemed that every time she tried doing so, she would only dissolve into a puddle of tears. Thus, her scars were still there in her heart for quite some time and she had never actually gotten over her trauma just yet.
Her psychologist told her that if she was unable to confront her problems, the best solution for her would be to avoid it altogether because in order to get better, she had to reopen some old wounds that might actually hurt her a second time.
She listened to her psychologist and never confronted it. She had always been careful to avoid her problems.
The treatment was successful because after some time had passed, she realized it did not hurt her as much anymore. She stopped paying attention to any news related to Boyle in the United States after that. It seemed like Boyle had completely vanished from her life and she somehow felt free and liberated during that recovery period. She even stopped having trouble sleeping for some time after.
However, running into him again tonight felt like a huge boulder had been dropped on her, causing waves of intense emotions to pour out from within her. She could not calm herself down for a really long time.
