The next afternoon, Boyle bought two entry tickets to the amusement park.
The Friday crowd at the amusement park was not as large as expected.
However, the queue was rather long for many of the rides.
There were many stalls selling cotton candy at the amusement park. Boyle bought one for her and soon, her face was sticky due to the silky sugar strands. She looked like a little kitten who had dirtied its face.
Cherie had lots of fun at the amusement park. She held Boyle’s hand and actively went to queue for each ride.
Fireball, roller coaster and turbo drop… Both of them had gone on all the wild rides at least once.
As she was on those wild rides, she yelled at the top of her lungs and her scream nearly deafened Boyle.
Although she was afraid of the rides, she could not stop herself from taking the rides.
When she was on the merry-go-round ride, she turned her head around and smiled at Boyle so that he could take a photo of her.
Her smile was radiant and breathtaking.
Ever since then, the photo was cherished and safely kept in his wallet.
The sky gradually turned dark around six in the cold winter evening.
They could see the lighted up Ferris wheel rotating slowly not far away from them. The view was mesmerizing.
“Boyle, let’s go on a Ferris wheel ride!”
As they were queueing for the ride, Cherie turned around and chit-chatted with Boyle,
“Boyle, is there anything that you’re afraid of?”
Boyle lowered his gaze to look at her. “I was afraid of getting beaten when I was young. As I grew up, I was fearful of being poor.”
Now, even when Hanson got drunk, he dared not hit Boyle as he used to. Boyle currently had the capability to earn lots of money.
The current thing he was most afraid of was to lose someone he loved.
Cherie furrowed her brows as she stared at him. She pursed her lips and sighed. “Boyle, you had a tough life. I will take good care of you in the future.”
The little girl lifted her hand and patted his head.
Boyle gently pulled her into his embrace and asked, “What are you afraid of, Rie?”
“I’m afraid of the dark. Have I ever told you that I was kidnapped when I was young? I was blindfolded and the surroundings were pitch black. I called out to my parents and grandfather but no one came to the rescue. It was probably due to the distressing incident which traumatized me and hence I've been afraid of the dark since then.”
Boyle could feel a pang in his heart.
‘I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry for that.’
She lifted her chin and beamed at Boyle. “As long as you’re by my side, I won’t feel afraid whenever I’m in dark places.”
Boyle placed his hand on the back of her head and took her into his arms. His eyes were full of guilt and regret.
…
They waited for their turn and as they hopped into the cabin, the sky had turned completely dark. However, the cabin was lighted up with decorative lights.
As they gazed out of the window, they could enjoy the magnificent and mesmerizing view of the city lights.
As their cabin slowly moved upwards, Cherie said, “I heard that if a couple kisses as the cabin reaches the top, they will be together forever.”
Boyle smiled at her naive and innocent thinking. “Where did you hear such nonsense from?”
“We can try if you don’t believe it.”
Boyle looked at her under the dusky light and said, “Let’s try it later then.”
He purely wished to kiss her and that was it.
Soon, the cabin had arrived at the top.
Boyle took her into his arms and lowered his head to kiss the little girl in his embrace.
The kiss was fiery and passionate. Her eyes were glazed over due to the kiss.
Boyle was clear-headed before they ended the kiss. He then looked at her who was still indulged from the kiss and said, “Cherie.”
“Yeah?”
“Let’s break up.”
“...”
Cherie opened her eyes in a daze and did not take his words seriously. She pouted her lips and said, “Boyle, how can you say that I’m mischievous? You’re the one who likes to prank people instead.”
Cherie was sobbing and was out of breath. However, she kept following him from behind as if she was an abandoned stray cat, hoping to return to her owner’s side.
Boyle was trying hard to control himself to not turn around and look at her.
He would not be soft-hearted as long as he did not look at her.
In fact, they were not compatible to be each other’s life partners. In the end, they would break up anyway. Hence, he might as well just end the relationship now.
Cherie’s face was drenched in tears. She was wiping her tears away while persistently following behind Boyle.
“Boyle, tell me. Why do you want to break up with me?”
Cherie kept asking the question over and over again.
Boyle clenched his teeth and turned around. In an impassive tone, he said, “Fine. Since you wish to get to the bottom of it, let me tell you the truth then.”
“You’re too childish. I feel exhausted from being together with you. I have to take care of you just like how a father takes care of his daughter. I took a liking to you initially because you’re naive and get tricked easily. I can just beckon you and you’ll sleep with me. Cherie, do you know that there are many guys in the university who want to pursue your love? I’m not an exception too. However, it’s my vanity that makes me want to be together with you, not love. I managed to sleep with the daughter of the Fudd Family, whom many people wished to win her heart.
“Slowly, I started to lose feelings for you. That’s because I’ve successfully won your heart over and I don’t feel that special with you anymore. People will get sick of the shoes that were once new. It is especially so when I need to constantly take care of it.
“I have a lot of work to do every day. After getting off work, I was so exhausted that I wished to be alone for a while. However, I can’t do that as I need to reply to your messages, return your calls and play with you.
“Cherie, I can’t be like you. You have an outstanding family and background which gives you the capability to fool around. My time is precious and yet, I need to sacrifice the time in earning money just to accompany you.
“Please, I beg you. Don’t cling onto me anymore. I can’t afford to fool around with you anymore.”
It was his first time saying so much in one go. Like sharp daggers, she felt as if his words pierced through her chest and her heart bled profusely.
Tears welled up in her eyes and she looked at him in disbelief. She felt extremely disheartened and was choked in tears as she asked, “D... do you mean it?”
“Yes.”
Smack!
She lifted her hand and subsequently gave a cold, hard slap across his face. A crisp sound was heard.
Boyle was stunned by the blow.
He felt as if time had stood still for a few seconds. He took a deep breath, turned his head toward her and looked at her with a smug on his face. “Mrs. Fudd, you’ve slapped me now. Can you not cling onto me anymore?”
Cherie clenched her fists and her eyes were red. She stood in the cold as she watched Boyle walk further away from her. As Boyle’s leaving figure disappeared in the dark, she sank to her knees, hugging herself against the wind and started bawling her eyes out.
