Chapter 80
The nurse hesitated. Her gaze flicked to Sydney with a complicated expression, but she nodded anyway.
Someone nearby tried to reason with Penelope. “Penny, maybe let Dr. Wilson check on the kid first…”
“You think I would?” Penelope looked unhinged, her eyes blazing. “She already hurt my son. Who knows what she’ll do next and call it ‘treatment“?”
“Call an ambulance,” Sydney’s clear voice cut through the tension.
She turned without another word and walked off with a stony expression.
At the office, Sydney grabbed her bag, then passed the nurses‘ station on her way out, catching fragments of whispered conversation.
“Could she really be the one who hurt that kid?”
“Who knows? I’ve got goosebumps. If it was her, I don’t think I could keep working with her.”
“And remember that restaurant a few days ago? She showed up with Mr. Hampton. Then that kid said what he said this morning. What if she really is the other woman?”
“Impossible!” Jasmine Larkin, one of the nurses closest to Sydney, couldn’t take it anymore. “Dr. Wilson isn’t that kind of person. Can you stop spreading gossip If you’ve got so much to say, why don’t you go ask her yourself?”
A mocking voice shot back, “Fine. You go ask her since you’re such good friends.”
Jasmine turned on her heel and stormed off–only to run straight into Sydney at the corner.
Sydney calmly patted her shoulder and said, “I’ve got something to take care of.”
“Dr. Wilson…” Jasmine hesitated. “Are you really going to let them talk about you like that?”
Sydney gave a composed smile. “The truth will come out. People will figure it out eventually.”
She gave a slight shrug. “As for the rest, they’ve already made up their minds. Let them talk.”
She never wasted time proving herself to others. The more you tried to explain, the more it drained you. Her energy was limited, and she wouldn’t spend it on pointless noise.
By the time Sydney arrived at Sterling Corp, Marcus‘ luh had just been delivered. She ended up sharing the meal with him.
