As Hugo closed the door, he paused. When he saw Diana about to walk away, he called out to her without thinking, "Diana."

Diana turned to look at him. Her gaze was calm and carried the quiet patience of an older sister.

"What is it?" she asked, assuming he needed something. "The staff should have left new clothes and toiletries for you. They're in the room."

Hugo swallowed. As though asking casually, he said, "Is Callum courting you?"

The question came so abruptly that the hallway fell silent for a moment.

Diana leaned against the doorframe, clearly a little surprised by his bluntness.

"Yes." She did not deny it. Instead, she smiled. "What do you think of him?"

Hugo could see from her clear, almond-shaped eyes that she genuinely wanted his opinion. That trust sent a faint ache through his chest, along with a quiet, secret joy.

"Callum seems like a good man. Even-tempered and well brought up." As he spoke, his gaze drifted past her shoulder, as though he were simply stating a fact.

But his next words came out so softly that even he failed to notice. "He just isn't right for you."

Diana blinked, clearly intrigued by his answer. "How isn't he right?"

Hugo met her gaze without flinching. "The timing isn't right."

It was the most honest thought he had.

Callum had entered her life while she was still in the middle of her divorce, before she had even had the chance to catch her breath.

Someone as flawless as Callum seemed would only become another burden for her. She had grown used to carrying everything on her own. If someone suddenly tried to shoulder that burden with her, her first instinct would be to pull away.

But Hugo would wait until she was truly ready to look ahead.

Diana clearly had not expected an answer like that.

She paused for a moment before breaking into a gentle smile. "I feel the same way. All right, get some rest. Good night."

Hugo remained where he was, watching her until she disappeared around the end of the hallway. Only then did he slowly withdraw his gaze and push open the guest room door.
