Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 789

A light rain drifted down from the sky, and the cold bit deep.

Sydney stepped beneath the eaves before speaking, her tone calm and unhurried. "Mr. Clifford, why didn't you call ahead? If I hadn't been seeing patients today, you would have made the trip for nothing."

Jeremiah stepped forward naturally as he spoke, his tone warm and familiar. "I checked online first and saw you had clinic hours this morning. Besides, I've been feeling much better lately, so it wouldn't have mattered even if the trip had been for nothing."

"And this way I get to see how you've been doing too. Is the baby doing well?" His gaze dropped to Sydney's visibly pregnant belly, his smile kind and concerned, every bit the picture of an elder looking out for someone from the younger generation.

Without changing her expression, Sydney shifted half a step aside and gestured for him to enter. "Let's go inside and talk. It's cold out here."

Jeremiah nodded and followed her into the clinic.

The heat inside was running high. It was still early, before patients had begun to be called in.

Sydney led Jeremiah straight into the consultation room. She removed her coat, hung it over the back of a chair, and motioned for him to sit across the desk.

"How has the cough been lately?" she asked as she placed the pulse pillow on the desk.

"Better than before, but I still wake up coughing once or twice a night," Jeremiah said, resting his wrist on the pulse pillow. "Dr. Wilson, your skill is excellent. I trust you."

Sydney lowered her eyes and took his pulse, her fingertips feeling the steady rhythm through the thin pillow. Her expression revealed nothing.

The room fell quiet for a moment. Only the faint sounds of patients waiting outside drifted through the closed door.

Jeremiah's gaze lingered on her lowered profile.

After a long pause, he spoke as though the thought had only just occurred to him. "By the way, Dr. Wilson, when's your due date again? Looking at you, it can't be far off, can it?"

Sydney glanced up at him before lowering her eyes again. "There's still some time. No rush."

"Good to hear." Jeremiah nodded. "At this stage, you need to be careful with everything. If you ever need help with anything, just let me know."
