Tiffany looked at Raymond but did not respond right away. She understood what his words meant, and she knew that, with the Hutton family's influence, stepping into a matter like this in Jouleston would not have been difficult.

What she could not understand was why he had bothered to do it at all.

"Raymond." She spoke his name softly.

"Mm?"

"You didn't used to be like this."

The remark caught Raymond slightly off guard.

Tiffany met his gaze and spoke in a level tone. "The old Raymond never explained himself to anyone, and he never used to... quietly take care of things behind the scenes, then refuse to admit it."

Raymond did not respond immediately. He stayed silent for a few seconds before asking, "So what was I like before?"

"Before, you couldn't wait for the whole world to know every good thing you'd done." Tiffany held his gaze without blinking. "Whatever you did, you made sure everyone knew it was you. You were terrified they might forget to be grateful."

A trace of old familiarity lingered in her words, and she did not realize how unguarded her tone had become.

Raymond let out a genuine laugh. "That was before. People change."

Tiffany looked at him, and something that had remained tightly wound inside her for so long finally eased, if only slightly.

At that moment, Florence's laughter and Agatha's voice drifted out from the parlor.

Raymond tilted his head toward the house, as though unwilling to dwell on the subject any longer. "Come on. Let's head back in."

Tiffany did not press him any further. She simply followed him back into the parlor.

When Agatha saw them walk in one after the other, her gaze lingered on them for a brief moment before she asked with a laugh, "Did you find Yoyo? Did he burrow into the flower beds again?"

"Found him. He was lying there, sunbathing," Raymond answered casually and returned to the sofa, settling into his usual relaxed posture.
