On the way to the airport, Diana looked at Hugo's message, and a flicker of surprise crossed her eyes.

Nina glanced back from the passenger seat. "Ms. Hutton, is that from Hugo?"

"Yes. He fired that secretary." Diana's tone remained even, giving nothing away.

Nina chose her words carefully. "Ms. Hutton, don't you think Hugo listens to you more than anyone else?"

Less than half an hour had passed since they left the Jillson Group. To an outsider, the decision might have seemed swift and ruthless, but that was not what caught Nina's attention.

Diana barely gave it any thought. "Hasn't he always been like that?"

Nina remembered how the Kingston family had found Hugo difficult to manage when he was younger. Unwilling to discipline him too harshly, they often asked Diana to keep him in line.

Back then, Hugo had still been in school. No matter how much he resisted, a few words from Diana were enough to make him fall silently into line.

"Fair enough." Nina smiled and let the subject drop.

As the car crossed the overpass, Diana asked suddenly, "Has Sydney been doing all right these past few days?"

"She's doing well. I heard that your mother and Mr. James are heading to Delta Mansion today to see her."

Smiling, Nina continued, "Ms. Sydney is the whole family's sweetheart right now. Even your grandmother calls every few days to ask when the baby's due and what's still missing so she can have it sent over from Brimcrest."

Diana smiled. "Sydney must be thrilled."

Nina nodded. "She definitely is."

An image surfaced in Diana's mind: Sydney sitting in the parlor at Delta Mansion with one hand resting on her belly, smiling softly.

Her sister was about to become a mother.
