Diana's phone vibrated, and she answered.
"Ms. Hutton? This is Mark Svenson from the Provincial Science and Technology Association. I'm calling to confirm the presentation schedule for the Innovation Award ceremony on Wednesday."
Diana murmured her acknowledgment, and Mark reviewed several procedural details. When he finished, he added in a slightly hesitant tone, "One more thing, Ms. Hutton. We've received a request from Mr. Leon Kingston to add a speech to the ceremony. Do you have any objection?"
Diana frowned slightly. "Leon Kingston?"
"Yes. He's currently the CEO of the Kingston Group, so the speaking slot would be appropriate given his position," Mark said carefully. "But considering your relationship with Mr. Kingston, the organizers wanted to ask for your opinion first."
"It's fine," Diana said evenly. "His speech is his business. It has nothing to do with me."
Mark let out an audible sigh of relief. "Understood. We'll proceed as planned."
After ending the call, Diana leaned back in her chair and watched the sun slowly sink beyond the window, her expression unreadable.
Leon's presence at the event was clearly about more than giving a speech. Whatever his reason, Diana had no intention of playing along.
Her phone buzzed again. Hugo had sent a photo of a plate of elegantly arranged pastries, along with a message.
Hugo: [Tried these at a place today. Not bad. I'll bring some for you next time.]
Diana: [Sure.]
His response came almost immediately.
Hugo: [That's a promise, then.]
Diana looked at the words "That's a promise" on the screen and couldn't help smiling. She sent back a quick emoji before slipping her phone into her bag.
…
On Wednesday morning, the Science and Technology Innovation Award ceremony was held at the city's International Convention Center.
