Early the next day, Diana had just arrived at the office when she received a call from Joseph.
"Diana, are you free this weekend? Clara would like to take you to dinner." Joseph's tone was gentle, with a trace of caution.
"If there's something you need, just say it," Diana said.
"It's still about you and Leon. He hasn't had much of an appetite these past few days. You know Clara watched him grow up, so naturally it pains her to see him like this." Joseph broached the subject carefully. "So... Clara would like to have you over for a meal, just to see if there's still any chance to work things out."
"There's no chance left for him and me." Diana's tone remained calm. "The divorce agreement has already been filed. Once the cooling-off period ends, we'll get the certificate."
"I know, I know." Joseph hurriedly added, "It's just a meal, nothing more. Clara also wants to apologize to you. What happened with Helen before was our family's failure to handle things properly."
With the matter framed that way, Diana found it difficult to refuse. "Fine. I'll come by on Saturday."
"Good, good. Saturday at noon, then. I'll send the driver to pick you up."
"No need. I'll get there myself."
After hanging up, Diana rubbed the space between her brows. She could easily guess the purpose of the meal. It was nothing more than another attempt to change her mind.
However, she had never been the kind of person to look back.
Pushing the matter aside, Diana turned her attention to the day's work.
…
On Saturday morning, Diana changed into a suitable outfit and prepared to head out.
Florence saw her in the living room and set down the yarn in her hands. "Off to the Kingston family's?"
Diana nodded.
"Whatever they say, don't take it to heart," Florence cautioned. "Make your own decisions."
"Okay." Diana's voice was steady. "Don't worry. I know what I'm doing."
Florence nodded. "Go on, then. Don't stay out too long."
Because the Kingston Group's new project was located in Jouleston, Diana didn't need to make a special trip to Brimcrest.
The moment she stepped out of the courtyard, a black Maybach pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down, revealing a sharply defined face.
