Sydney smiled but didn't argue. She took the tablet into the lab, made the necessary adjustments herself, and handed it back to Marcus.
"The data's been corrected. You can run the simulation again tomorrow." Her voice was light, unhurried, and completely certain. "If everything goes smoothly, we should be entering clinical trials by the new year at the latest."
Marcus blinked. "That soon?"
He had been stuck on that dataset for longer than he cared to admit. She had walked in and solved the problem without breaking a sweat.
Then again, that was exactly why Alan had taken her on as his direct student. It was hard not to favor someone who possessed both talent and dedication.
They left the lab together.
Marcus glanced at her, then hesitated before speaking. "Should we scale back your clinic hours a little? Just to be safe."
He was concerned about how much strain her body could handle.
"No need." Sydney shook her head gently. Her hand drifted to her rounded belly before she realized it. "The baby's been cooperative."
Aside from the scare earlier in the pregnancy, everything had been remarkably stable.
Not for the first time, she found herself wondering what the baby would be like once they arrived.
Julian, for his part, had his own opinion. He seemed to think a daughter needed a little wildness in her.
Henry stepped out of one of the side labs, spotted her in the corridor, and quickened his pace as soon as he recognized her. "Dr. Wilson?"
The corners of his eyes creased with his smile. "You showed up without telling anyone? Are you free tonight? The whole project team could get together."
They had only recently shared a group dinner. Still, if it meant another chance to spend time with Sydney, no one would complain.
Since the last drug had gone to market, salaries and bonuses across the team had increased considerably. Half the group had been waiting for the right opportunity to thank her properly.
"I honestly just decided to stop by on a whim." Sydney laughed and gestured helplessly at her stomach. "A dinner out probably won't work right now. Once the baby's here, I'll treat everyone properly."
The truth was that if she attended a group dinner, Julian would come with her. And with the big boss sitting at the table, no one would be able to relax. There was no need to put her colleagues through that.
