Nina moved to follow Diana inside when they reached the hospital.

Diana glanced back. "Stay here. Get word to Julian."

She didn't believe Helen would follow through on the threat. A card only held value as leverage when both sides stood on equal ground. The moment Helen played it, she would be signing her own death warrant.

Even so, this involved Sydney. Even if the odds were one in ten thousand, Diana would not take the risk.

It was better to have Julian alerted, just in case.

Nina nodded and stayed behind while Diana went in alone.

"You came." Helen lay propped up in the hospital bed. At first glance, she genuinely looked pale. "I thought someone like you wouldn't have any soft spots."

"She's my sister," Diana said. "Not a soft spot."

To Diana, family was more like armor. It made her sharper, more cautious. It kept her from making mistakes.

She dragged a chair over and sat without ceremony, crossing her long legs at the ankle with an air of calm patience. She looked less like a woman who had just been threatened and more like someone settling in for a routine negotiation.

"Say what you want to say. Besides keeping your job at the Kingston Group, what else do you want?"

Diana already knew there was more to it. If the job had been the only issue, Helen would never have summoned her to a hospital room.

Helen studied her composure, and something in her expression shifted, as though she were testing for cracks beneath the surface.

"I'm pregnant. It's Leon's child. And that child is going to carry the Kingston name."

She had assumed no woman could remain unmoved after hearing that. Diana did pause, if only for a moment.

That explained Leon's urgency that morning. The way he had come at her without thinking.

The fingers resting on her knee curled inward slightly, but her voice remained even. "I already told you on the phone. Leon and I will be divorced soon. The only thing I can do for you is give you the phone number for the Kingston residence."

She stood to leave, but Helen climbed out of bed and grabbed her arm. "You're the only one who can help me. Leon would never tear his family apart over this. I promise, if you agree, I'll never come near you again."
