Even before the divorce, their marriage had never been normal. He had never once admitted his relationship with Penelope to her.

Caleb knew all too well how much it had hurt. He tried to explain. "I've really cut ties with Penelope. There won't be any more contact. I promise you that."

She lowered her eyes, silent for a moment, then looked at him. "So you've cut off Penny. What about a Jenny? Or a Renny?"

She had always believed that once a cheater, always a cheater. A person's true nature never changed. And she was unwilling to gamble her future on the hope that someone might change. Her life offered too few chances for mistakes.

Her words left Caleb uneasy. He was still searching for Precious. If she was unmarried, if she needed his care and attention, he would give it. Even if he swore such thoughts never crossed his mind, Sydney would not believe him.

She fell back into her rhythm—up before dawn, bundled in a down jacket against the morning chill, ready to head out. The weather was warming, yet the early hours still bit through the layers.

This time, she did not see Penelope at the clinic. Instead, as soon as she arrived, one of the young nurses rushed over with sparkling eyes and whispered at her side, "Syd, I've got great news for you."

Sydney blinked. "What is it?"

"I heard the homewrecker won't be coming to the clinic anymore!" the nurse said, her voice loud with glee.
