No longer a pushover (Noelle and Cedric) novel Chapter 986

All the leaves had fallen off the trees in the garden, and only a few flowers remained. Noelle stepped outside, letting the cold wind brush against her. It helped clear her mind a little.

"Aren't you cold?" Carl's voice sounded beside her, and he draped a jacket over her.

Noelle turned and instinctively refused. "I'm not cold."

"But I think you are." His hand rested lightly on her shoulder, his gaze impossibly gentle.

Noelle couldn't stand this version of Carl. She stumbled back, pulling off the jacket and handing it back.

Carl sighed. "Noelle, are you still angry with me?"

Noelle's eyes narrowed. What did he mean by that?

With how things were going in this life, there hadn't been any conflict between them. And the surgery hadn't happened.

Noelle probed, "I'm not quite sure what you mean."

Carl smiled bitterly. "I've been so caught up all these years and never paid attention to you. I didn't even realize how much you were suffering.

"If I'd cared a little more, maybe Donovan and the others wouldn't have been so biased toward Xenia."

Noelle lowered her gaze. So that was what he meant.

Too bad. If Carl had returned earlier, the course of events would likely have followed the same trajectory as her last life.

She instinctively brushed a hand over her waist. If things had gone the way they had before, there would probably be a scar there and a missing organ.

She looked at the trees in the distance. "Nothing would have changed even if you'd come back earlier."
