"So, you decided to play along with the setup? Do you even realize what would've happened if something had gone wrong with Cedric?" Emma coldly asked.
Ruth hesitated for a moment. "I did regret it afterward. Plus, Cedric is just your stepson, isn't he? Don't you have a son of your own?"
Emma stared at her in disbelief. "How could you say something like that?"
"I know it sounds bad, but isn't it the truth? If Cedric were out of the picture, your son would inherit everything from the Greene family. Wouldn't that be better for you?
"Honestly, back when Cedric was safe, didn't you at least wish something would happen to him?"
"I did not! Not everyone's as twisted and selfish as you are!" Emma angrily shoved her away.
"You're calling me twisted? Oh, please. You're not that noble, either.
"If you hadn't tried so hard to win over Cedric back then, would you have ever married into the Greene family? Don't forget that I was supposed to marry the Greenes, not you!"
Ruth's words spilled out in a moment of impulse. But once she said them, she started regretting it, though that thought quickly faded when she saw the pain and shock on Emma's face.
The day had finally come. She'd finally said it all.
Emma's face was pale with rage. "T-that's how you've thought of me all these years?"
"How else should I think then? Was I any inferior? Mrs. Greene Senior had her eye on me, and you were just the tag-along on my blind date. Yet, you stole my future husband right out from under me!"
Emma's eyes widened in disbelief. "I never approached the two of you that day. I just happened to run into Cedric in the garden. He was being bullied, and I helped. That's all."
"And who asked you to jump in and play the hero? That was why Cedric thought you were better, and you ended up getting into the Greene family!"
Every time Ruth looked at the broken Merlock residence and the useless Dieter, she resented Emma even more. If Emma hadn't snatched away her perfect match, she'd be the one living in luxury.
Upon hearing all of this, Emma felt her heart go cold. She stared at Ruth and said, "It was Cedric's dad who tried to win me over. I didn't shamelessly marry into the Greene family for money."
