What Laura said now was no different from what Ruth had claimed back then.
Cedric scoffed. "Like mother, like daughter. You say the same things. Let me be honest with you, then.
"Neither I nor the Liddell family will stop pursuing this matter. Instead of wasting time on these tricks, you'd better start thinking about finding a good lawyer."
Of course, the best lawyers were already working for the Greene Corporation. The Merlock family was already beyond saving.
Laura finally began to panic. She had come here intending to test Cedric, but she hadn't expected that he and Noelle were already secretly working together on the investigation. The Merlock family was now in serious danger.
Laura tried to reason with him. "Cedric, my mom treated you decently over the years. Can't you at least show some mercy?"
"First of all, didn't your mother have a motive for showing me kindness? Do I need to spell it out for you?
"All these years, your mother has used the excuse of being my mom's best friend to get countless benefits. Do I need to list them for you one by one?" Cedric's gaze pierced through Laura.
He knew Ruth often took advantage of his mother's kindness, though they were mostly things he had never bothered to hold against her. But that didn't mean he was blind to the Merlocks' scheming.
Laura felt exposed under his gaze, and she felt deeply uncomfortable. She knew what he said was true, but hearing it was still humiliating.
She quickly adjusted herself. "Our mothers were close friends. Mrs. Greene helped of her own free will, and the Merlock family never mistreated you in any way. Besides, we grew up together. You have never doubted my feelings for you, right?"
Laura grabbed Cedric's arm pleasingly. But he pulled his arm away coldly.
Laura panicked. "Cedric, must you be so heartless?"
Cedric shook his head. "Laura, do you really think everyone's a fool? You know perfectly well how sincere that so-called love of yours was."
