When Noelle saw Ivy and Eason, she couldn't help but marvel at how unpredictable fate could be. Then again, it made sense. Ivy was also staying at this hospital, so running into her wasn't exactly surprising.
Emma had seen Ivy too, but she said nothing after a glance.
They walked over to another bench and basked in the sun.
Emma smiled and said, "I never used to think much of the sun, but after everything that's happened, I've realized how many things I used to take for granted."
"Yeah, sunlight feels really warm."
Noelle thought back to her past life, when she'd been locked away in a dark room. Every day, the thing she longed for most was to feel the sun on her skin.
Just then, Ivy wheeled herself over to them. She spoke tentatively, "Mrs. Green, Ms. Liddell, are you two out here enjoying the sun as well?"
Noelle turned and looked at her. "Yeah, what a coincidence."
Ivy glanced back at Eason behind her. "Come here and thank Ms. Liddell. If she and Mr. Greene hadn't saved you that day… I don't even want to imagine what might've happened to us."
Eason stepped forward, avoiding Noelle's gaze. He lowered his head and mumbled a soft "thank you".
Ivy let out a sigh. "He's shy by nature. I hope you don't mind, Ms. Liddell."
"I don't. Like I said before, I wasn't thinking about getting anything in return when I helped. And you already gave me a banner of appreciation. There's really no need for this."
Ivy suddenly looked a little flustered. "Ms. Liddell, that's not what I meant. I just wanted to thank you."
Emma said, "Noelle already said there's no need for that. You don't have to keep repeating it. She and I have some things to talk about privately. Would you mind giving us a little space?"
Ivy quickly nodded. "Of course." She turned her wheelchair and started rolling away.
Noelle felt like something was off. She looked at Emma. "Emma, was Matthias really that fond of her back then?"
"He cared for her, I suppose. Mia was born with some congenital issues, so everyone in the family paid her extra attention. But, you know, men from powerful families always want a son to carry on the legacy.
"Matthias was no different. Otherwise, he wouldn't have gone out and found another woman."
"Were Mia's parents still married at the time?"
"They were. But her mother had been seriously ill for a long time. Everyone knew she didn't have much time left. So when someone new showed up, all of us looked down on Ivy, and we didn't think much of Matthias either."
Emma sighed. "But we were outsiders. There was nothing we could do to stop it.
"Not long after that, Mia's mother passed away. The mistress moved in, got pregnant, and gave birth to a son shortly after."
