Salena got so furious at Mia's words that she raised her hand to slap the latter.
But Eugene, who'd been watching from the side the entire time, stepped forward and grabbed her wrist. His voice was cold as he said, "Assault is a criminal offense, Mrs. Cantrell. Do you want to end up like Mrs. Merlock?"
Salena flew into a rage. "Who do you think you are to say that! Have you forgotten how you once came crawling to me and begged to be with Mia?"
Mia never knew anything about that, while Eugene calmly replied, "I saw you as an elder Mia respected and depended on the most. Are you still that person now?"
That struck a nerve, and Salena's expression faltered slightly.
Eugene coldly shook her hand off and continued, "If I ever see you try to hit her again, whichever hand you use, I'll make sure you never use it again."
"How dare you! Who do you think you are to threaten me!"
Salena had always been overbearing, especially among the Cantrells. The relatives usually catered to her whims.
Now, not only was Mia standing against her, but even a mere thug she used to look down on was threatening her to her face.
Salena turned angrily to Mia and snapped, "Are you sure you'll protect these people and turn against me? I used to treat you so well, but an ungrateful ingrate like you has clearly forgotten all that."
"Aunt Salena, my money was the only thing you ever valued about me. That was the only reason you treated me well."
At her words, the other relatives jumped in quickly.
"That's not fair, Mia. Aunt Salena has always treated you well, and we've all seen it."
