"Rachel, what are you even saying? What's so bad about me? I've got plenty going for myself!" Ashton protested.
Rachel stood alone, surrounded by family, being picked apart from every direction.
Noelle had been watching from the doorway long enough. She finally stepped in, walked straight over, and took Rachel's hand. "Come on. Let's get some air."
The moment Rachel saw her, the tears she'd been holding back finally spilled over. But just as they were leaving, that irritating voice followed them again.
"Ms. Liddell," Ashton called out, hurrying up beside them. "I know I was out of line earlier, but I hope you won't hold it against me. Maybe we can grab dinner sometime, and I'll give you a proper apology?"
He looked confident, like he still thought he had a shot, as if persistence could chip away at anything.
Sara chimed in as well. "That's right. Ashton even booked a fancy restaurant just for this. Surely you can give him a little face?"
Noelle stopped and looked at them, her voice clear and cold. "Why would I?"
Her bluntness made Sara flush with embarrassment. She quickly said, "We're not nobodies, you know. Our family used to have a working relationship with Liddell Corporation."
"Oh?" Noelle raised an eyebrow. "What kind of relationship?"
"We used to supply raw materials."
Noelle replied flatly, "So... a factory. Huh."
Her eyes held a flicker of amusement, and Sara's face turned even redder. Compared to a family like the Liddells, people like them were clearly still playing in the kiddie pool.
Noelle didn't waste another second on them and led Rachel out of the room. She handed over a tissue. "Was it because of me?"
Rachel shook her head. "No, not at all. It's always been like this with my family. I've been fed up with Ashton for a long time—he's just so exhausting."
