Lucas repeated seriously, "I'll definitely help you. Since you can't find solutions for some problems, why not settle for the next best option?"
Lucas's gaze was filled with intense anticipation and sincerity, and I could not help but have ridiculous thoughts. However, I quickly snapped out of it. I was being too confident.
I shook my head with a smile but still felt grateful for his offer. "Thank you, Lucas. Don't worry. I'm fine."
As soon as I returned to my hotel room and shut the door, the day's incidents came flooding back. Everything Alex did and said was etched in my mind. As long as I was alone, I would always recall the memories. I was sure he was disappointed in me.
Sitting on the floor near the bed, I hugged my knees and buried my face in it. Only then did I feel secure.
Just then, a sharp ringtone filled the room, but I stayed unmoved. However, the phone continued ringing persistently.
Given no choice, I picked up the phone to find that it was a call from Lila. I answered it weakly. "Lila."
"Serena, a-are you all right?" Lila sounded anxious.
"Yes," I said gloomily.
Lila suppressed the anger in her tone as worry filled her heart. "Don't be too sad. A fickle and frivolous man like Alex is not worthy of you. What's so great about Xena anyway? You're the true treasure on earth. Alex just doesn't know how to appreciate you, which is why he's marrying a woman like Xena. He'll soon regret it."
As I listened to Lila complain on my behalf, I felt touched and perplexed at the same time. "Lila, how do you know Alex is getting married to Xena?"
Fortunately, the colleagues who were here on a business trip with me were oblivious to the news. They just smiled warmly and asked if something had happened back home.
I glanced at Oliver, who was smiling politely. Immediately, I knew Alex had ordered the news to be kept under control.
At that moment, I felt worse. I thought I was already numb to it all, but whenever new matters arose, I felt horrible. Although things had reached this point, Alex still cared about me.
I forced a smile before answering my colleagues, "It's nothing. I just haven't been feeling well the past few days."
Bailey nodded. "Oh! Are you feeling better now? Are you going out?"
