Kenny herded his parents out of the room as if they were unruly children.
“We’re relieved to know she’s okay, but Fidelia is hungry, so we’re heading back now.”
The Harvests had arrived in a flurry, and they left just as abruptly.
The moment the door clicked shut, Claudia let out a quiet sigh of relief.
She sat down by the hospital bed and asked awkwardly, “Gideon, your family…?”
Gideon’s expression turned serious. “Don’t worry. Everyone in the Harvest family is perfectly normal. No history of genetic diseases.”
Claudia stared at him, feeling like she was the one going a little crazy. Her mind was a jumbled mess.
Thinking back on what Gideon's sister-in-law had said, Claudia found herself agreeing. She turned to Gideon.
“Gideon, you got hurt because of me. It’s only right that I take time off to look after you. But I’m worried about the gossip at the hospital. How about I hire a private nurse for you? I’ll cover the medical bills.”
She had taken the leap and decided to give things a try with Gideon, but the gap between their social standings was vast.
He had saved her today, and her colleagues were already speculating about their relationship. But rumors were just rumors. Without proof, the gossip and speculation would eventually die down. If they went public, however, it would be a completely different story.
Having lived two lives, she was no longer a young girl ruled by her heart. She had to prioritize her career, always. She couldn’t afford to burn her bridges. For now, she couldn’t make their relationship public.
Gideon saw her apprehension and didn’t press the issue. “If you’re not ready to go public with our relationship, I can wait.”
“You focus on your work,” he continued. “Just remember to come see me in the morning, at noon, and in the evening.”
As he spoke, he couldn’t resist reaching out to wrap an arm around her waist. “This is a private Harvest family suite. It’s very secure. You don’t have to be so cautious in here.”
Claudia gently pushed his hand away, but not before Gideon managed to steal a quick kiss.
Gideon rubbed his face. “Dad, Mom, Jackie, you all need to dial back those expressions. Seriously.”
The family gathered around his bed, forming a perfect circle.
Gideon's dad questioned him with a stern look. “Gideon, dating without the intention of marriage is just playing games!”
Gideon sat up, his hands clasped in front of him. “Dad, I’m serious about Claudia. I’d go to the courthouse with her tomorrow if I could.”
Gideon's mom chimed in, “Gideon, how many people are in Dr. Watkins’s family? What do her parents do? What do they like, what are their hobbies, what are their pet peeves? Tell us everything.”
At the mention of the Watkins family, Gideon’s expression darkened slightly. Claudia’s family adored York, and her younger brother practically worshipped him. Winning them over was going to be an uphill battle.
“Mom, the Watkins family are good people,” Gideon said. “They’re well-off. Her brother goes to the city's top high school and gets excellent grades. Her dad enjoys chess and sometimes plays at a local club or in the park downtown. Her mom spends her days shopping for groceries, cooking, and managing the house. She doesn't have any particular hobbies.”
