After Benton Harvest introduced everyone, Marcia's gaze landed on Claudia. Her eyes showed a flicker of surprise and admiration. "Benton, and who is this lovely lady?"
Claudia introduced herself gracefully. "Hello, Miss Windsor. My name is Claudia Watkins."
Their eyes met, and both saw a calm composure in the other. Claudia was the first to look away. It was clear this Marcia knew who she was.
York's eyes were glued to Claudia, not missing a single reaction.
Claudia took Hawley's hand. "If you'll excuse me, I'm going to get the little one something to eat."
Just as Claudia turned to leave, a waiter carrying a tray of drinks passed by. The tray tilted precariously, about to collide with her. Hugh instinctively wrapped an arm around Claudia's waist and spun them around, shielding her with his body.
Once Claudia regained her balance, she realized she was held in an intimate embrace by Hugh.
York froze. He had reacted the fastest, but he was the furthest away. Hugh, on the other hand, had been right beside her, close enough to reach out instantly.
Seeing Claudia protected in another man's arms, York's eyes narrowed, and his hands, hanging at his sides, clenched into tight fists.
The other guests witnessed the scene, their expressions toward York a mixture of pity and curiosity.
Hugh released Claudia and apologized publicly. "My apologies, Dr. Watkins. It was an emergency."
Claudia wasn't bothered. "I should be thanking you, Mr. Ferguson."
Though their exchange was polite, it felt natural and comfortable.
Marcia watched Claudia and Hugh walk away together, then she moved discreetly to York's side. "It seems Mr. Ferguson's ex-wife is quite popular."
York lowered his gaze, hiding the emotion in his eyes. Without looking at Marcia, he turned and walked away.
Darleen looked at Peter, confused. "What about me?"
Peter sighed. "You're completely clueless."
Darleen was speechless. She had always been sharp and intelligent. This was the first time anyone had ever called her clueless.
As the group chatted, Claudia excused herself to use the restroom on the second floor. When she came out, she ran into Marcia.
After a polite nod, Claudia left the restroom. Marcia, however, adjusted her hair in the mirror and called out to her retreating back, "Dr. Watkins, could we talk for a moment?"
Claudia paused and turned. "Miss Windsor, we don't know each other well."
Marcia walked toward her. "That's fine. We'll get to know each other after a few more meetings."
