On the side of the bustling street, Peter and Claudia stood side by side on the pavement, watching the river of traffic flow past.
Peter noticed a black luxury car slowly approaching in the distance.
"York is fighting against all this pressure to avoid divorcing you," he said to Claudia. "Do you think part of it is because he can't bear to lose you?"
Claudia stared ahead, her eyes vacant. "Peter, he's not afraid of losing me," she said calmly. "He won't divorce me because he wants to keep controlling me, to change me."
Peter glanced at her. "You've loved him for so many years. Are you sure you want to give up?"
Claudia didn't speak, but her firm nod was answer enough. "I regret loving him. I regret marrying him. I dream of divorcing him."
"Claudia, I know you're hurting," he said gently. "Talk to me. Don't keep everything bottled up."
She turned to face him, her eyes still very red. She managed a difficult smile. "Peter, since I was a little girl, I knew there were good people and bad people in the world. But I never imagined that the person who would be the cruelest to me would be the person I loved the most."
Peter's heart ached for her, but all he could do was sigh helplessly.
"I used to build my whole life around him," she said. “I put him first so much that I lost myself. Looking back now, I didn't even get basic respect in my marriage to York. What a joke, expecting him to be loyal."
"He always said I was too emotional, that I wasn't calm, that I was irrational and overthinking things. I didn't understand it back then, but after being hurt by him so many times, I finally get it. It's because he doesn't just not love me; he doesn't care about me at all. So even when his cheating broke my heart, he wouldn't allow me to show any negative emotion in front of him."
"You're only twenty-six," Peter said, trying to comfort her. "You can afford to lose this battle."
Claudia straightened up and tucked her hair behind her ear, facing the street again. "Peter, I played my hand, and I lost. I accept it."
York bought her jewelry only because she was Mrs. Ferguson, the Young Lady of the Ferguson family. He needed her to be a prop to uphold the family's image. He bought her parents a mansion and gave them a monthly allowance only because he was the CEO of the Ferguson Group, and he was afraid his in-laws would embarrass him.
