York immediately pulled out his phone. "Mark, we're flying back tonight."
—
The May Day holiday wasn't over yet, and a light rain had begun to fall over Capital City.
The first thing Claudia did upon returning was get a complete medical examination.
After work, she chatted with Gideon Harvest in his office for a while. By the time she left the hospital, the sky had already darkened.
She stopped in her tracks when she saw York walking toward her, holding an umbrella.
She had just flown back overnight. When did he get here?
"The rain's getting a bit heavy," York said. "I'll walk you to the parking lot."
Claudia hesitated for a moment before nodding.
She was still recovering from the miscarriage, and getting soaked in the rain wouldn't do her any good.
They walked in silence toward the parking lot, York tilting the umbrella over Claudia's head, leaving half of his own body exposed to the rain.
They stopped beside her car. York handed her a small jewelry box. "You agreed to be Mr. Ferguson's son's godmother. You should at least have a proper gift. I won this at an auction in Europe. It's perfect for a child."
When Claudia made no move to take it, York opened the box himself.
"A top-tier imperial green gemstone pendant," he said. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime find."
Claudia glanced at the pendant in his hand. It was cool and translucent, clearly worth a fortune.
But she still refused. "I'm the boy's godmother. I'll buy my own gift."
York couldn't help but frown. "Claudia, we're husband and wife. Do you really have to draw such a clear line between us?"
Claudia nodded earnestly. "Of course, we do. Otherwise, when we divorce, you'll try to settle accounts, and I'll be the one at a disadvantage."
York's face darkened. "I settled accounts with you? Did I ever ask you for anything?"
He stood there, frozen, clutching the gemstone pendant as the rain soaked him to the bone.
Not far away, Ann stood hidden behind a large tree, an umbrella in her hand, her eyes red with jealousy.
So, the pendant York had gone to such lengths to acquire wasn't for her son after all.
To please that bitch Claudia, he was willing to give such a precious gift to Hugh Ferguson's son.
Ann gritted her teeth in a jealous rage, turned, and slipped away into the night.
Around eight o'clock that evening, Claudia was in the living room with her parents and brother, chatting with the TV on, when the doorbell rang in a series of sharp, urgent bursts.
Claudia got up to answer it.
Seeing an incensed Ann James at the door, Claudia’s expression instantly turned to ice. "Ann, what are you doing here at my parents' place?"
Blinded by jealousy and fury, Ann shoved Claudia aside and stormed into the living room, completely losing control.
