York slowly loosened his grip.
He held her arms, looking into her eyes. "I admit, when Ann first came back, I was conflicted. I was wrong, I admit that. But I don't love her!"
Before he finished, Claudia cut in, "Even if you don't love her, you don't love me either."
They looked at each other. York tried to force a smile, but for a long moment, no sound came out.
He stared into her eyes, finally finding his voice.
"Claudia, give me one more chance. Let me learn how to love you."
Claudia laughed as she refused. "York, any man can love me. Except you. You don't deserve to."
Any hesitation on her part would be a betrayal to her past suffering, a betrayal to the child she never got to meet.
She pushed York away. "From now on, we are officially separated. I will have my lawyer file a petition with the court. I am getting this divorce, no matter what."
York met her determined gaze, and a sharp pain shot through his chest.
His eyes red, he clutched his chest, struggling for control. "I know I was unforgivably wrong. I agree to a temporary separation to give you time to cool down. But don't even think about a divorce!"
A ride-share car pulled up to the curb.
Claudia gave York one last look and said lightly, "Then let's just be separated for now."
No matter what, she would not give up on the divorce.
Watching Claudia get in the car and drive away, York leaned against a tree trunk for support, his body limp.
A few minutes later, Mark rushed over. "Mr. Ferguson, the surveillance shows Miss James leaving her apartment late at night."
York pulled his thoughts from his anguish and got into his car.
Two nights later, York's insomnia flared up, and he couldn't sleep a wink.
He stared at the small, five-inch photo of the baby sealed inside the crystal. The baby's big, dark, watery eyes seemed to look right at him, as if it were crying, as if it were cold.
York staggered, slumping into a chair, his body weak.
He clutched the crystal pendant to his chest and began to gasp for breath.
He had promised Claudia a temporary separation without disturbance. Her body was still recovering from the miscarriage; he couldn't afford to upset her again.
Remembering what she had said to him on the sidewalk that night, the sharp pain returned to his chest, more intense than before.
The pain was so severe he doubled over, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
He thought of how, whenever he felt unwell in the past, Claudia would anxiously fuss over him, unable to eat or sleep herself.
The agony was unbearable. York's body slid from the chair and hit the floor with a dull thud.
