Seeing York's strong reaction, Ann stood up nervously.
"York, don't be angry," she said. "Mrs. Ferguson just missed her grandson and asked me to bring him so she could see him."
York's eyes swept sharply over Ann's face. Then he turned and walked away.
"You stop right there!" Wendy commanded, slamming her water glass down on the table.
York paused and turned back. Ann gave him a pleading look, then half-pulled, half-dragged him into a seat.
Wendy ignored York's increasingly dark expression. "I just heard that Ann's mother had a fight with her brother and sister-in-law and fell ill from the stress. The child was frightened as well. How can you, as his father, be so unconcerned?"
York's brow furrowed. "Mom, can you please not interfere in my affairs?"
"I'd love not to interfere," Wendy retorted. "I told you to resolve this yourself. Have you?"
Seeing the mother and son arguing in front of her, Ann felt increasingly uncomfortable. She mustered her courage and said, "Mrs. Ferguson, you've misunderstood York. He takes very good care of us."
Wendy shot Ann a contemptuous glance. "Ann, is that all the dignity you have left? Your affair has become the talk of the town. Even if the two of you don't care about shame, we elders still have to face the world with our heads held high. And even if you're willing to be the "other woman" for the rest of your life—have you ever thought about the child?"
After the waiter left, Wendy turned to York. "You shouldn't have married Claudia if you weren't over Ann. And since you did marry Claudia, you shouldn't have done things to betray her. Now look at this mess. You don't have one proper family, but you're not quite two families either. Claudia is suffering from your betrayal, and Ann James and her son are left without any official standing."
York was getting restless. "Mom, what are you trying to say?"
"Since you've already upset Claudia, don't upset Ann and her son." Wendy said. "You and Ann already have a child. Legally, you may be the one at fault in your marriage, but you and Ann have a de facto relationship. You have an obligation to raise your child."
York's expression was beyond grim. He forced a twitch of his lips but couldn't refute her words. This was the inevitable outcome of his decision to acknowledge Ann's son. But he never expected his own mother to agree to his divorce from Claudia.
