No Divorce? The Billionaire's Love Chase! novel Chapter 256

York rolled down the window halfway and lit a cigarette.

He leaned his head back against the headrest, his eyes half-lidded as he smoked in silence.

The more silent York was, the more panicked Ann became.

In her desperation, she explained, "York, I swear, I never intended to put anything in your drink. I was just trying to find the right opportunity to tell you about it."

"I don't know what your wife is trying to do," Ann continued, "and I was afraid that telling you would affect your relationship, so I hesitated, wanting to wait and see. I never expected Darleen to see what I was holding and misunderstand."

York extended his hand out the window and tapped the ash from his cigarette.

"I have something to do. You can get a cab home," he said.

Ann let out a sigh of relief and scrambled out of the car.

As it neared midnight, Peter took Darleen home.

Rock walked Claudia home.

When the elevator doors opened, Rock asked Claudia, "If you two get into a fight later, call me. I'll come over and rough him up for you."

Claudia rolled her eyes at him.

Ever since she had known York, the few times he had truly lost his temper were over disputes with his grandfather about Ann.

York couldn't be bothered to argue with her, much less get physical. He'd just give her the cold shoulder. Every time.

Besides, Rock was completely unreliable.

He had promised her that he could crack York's computer without being detected. The very next day, York had confronted her about it.

Tonight, the plan to drug York had been exposed.

The powder she'd gotten was the latest stuff on the market. It was potent, with no antidote.

That useless Ann couldn't have dropped it somewhere worse—right at York's feet, where he had picked it up.

York might seem like a gentleman, but at his core, he was a ruthless businessman. He was clever, cruel, and incredibly cunning.

It wasn't impossible that he was planning to use this as an opportunity for revenge.

Watching York's expression, Claudia took a new glass from the overhead cabinet. She rinsed it with hot water three times before she felt safe enough to fill it.

Just as she lifted the glass to take a sip, York glanced at her with his deep eyes and slowly put his own glass down.

Seeing his reaction, Claudia's mind started racing with suspicion.

Ann should have blamed her by now. Instead, York was silent, attentive even. Something was off.

Suppressing her thirst, Claudia cautiously put the glass down again.
