When Claudia saw York hesitating to answer his phone, she glanced at the caller ID.
It was Ann.
Claudia reached out and pressed the answer key for him.
Ann's voice came through clearly. "York, something's wrong. Ethan seems to have eaten something bad and is complaining of a stomachache. I had a little to drink tonight, so I can't drive. Can you help me take him to the hospital?"
Hearing this, Claudia immediately urged York to go. "York, you should go see him. A child's health isn't something to gamble with."
York grabbed her wrist. "We'll go together."
Claudia shook his hand off. "A stomachache will require blood tests and scans. My being there won't help. Just get him to the hospital."
Having a child together meant York and Ann were tied for life.
No matter how much he tried to deceive himself, he couldn't deceive his own heart.
York saw that look of righteous self-sacrifice on Claudia's face again.
His brow furrowed, and his grip on her hand tightened unconsciously.
"Claudia," he said, "I know you're upset that Ann called, but the child is innocent."
He had just promised her he would try to keep Ann and her son from disturbing their lives.
And now Ann was calling in the middle of the night.
Claudia must be furious.
As they stood in a stalemate, Ann's call came through to Claudia's phone.
Claudia answered, "Don't worry, I'm sending him over right now."
After hanging up, she urged York to leave quickly.
York stood his ground.
"Claudia, you promised me you would stop making trouble."
Rock Sayer started to bargain. "Claudia, what's in it for me if I help you?"
Claudia made a generous offer. "Next time you come for a check-up, I'll order fewer tests to save you some money."
Rock Sayer pouted in disgust.
Seeing him unmoved, Claudia started to sweat. "How about I treat you to dinner?"
"Only if you let me come over for a free meal whenever I want," Rock Sayer countered.
Claudia pushed him down into the office chair. "Deal!"
With the agreement made, Rock Sayer finally sat down.
Claudia glanced nervously at the study door. "Hurry up. If he comes back and finds you here, I'm telling him you broke in."
Rock Sayer's hands flew across the keyboard, but his mouth wasn't idle. "If your husband catches me here, I'll just tell him you seduced me and wanted to be my sugar mama."
