York startled her fully awake. All her sleepiness was gone in a second.
Bending down, she picked up the stuffed animal that had fallen and walked inside without a word.
York grabbed her arm, his eyes fixed on the colorful menagerie of stuffed toys in her arms.
He spoke, his tone clearly hostile. "Why are you back so late?"
Claudia glanced at York but didn't speak. She shifted her body, shaking off his hand, and walked toward the living room.
Having his hand shrugged off, York's face turned frighteningly dark.
The two of them entered the living room.
York's voice grew heavier. "Claudia, I'm talking to you."
When Claudia still didn't respond, York seized her wrist.
The force of his grip made the stuffed toys scatter across the floor.
Claudia looked at the pile of toys in front of her and said calmly, "Did you stay up all night just to wait for me and ask me this?"
York repeated his question, "Why did you come back so late?"
They stared at each other for a few seconds before Claudia suddenly smiled.
She said, "York, our prenuptial agreement doesn't specify a curfew for me."
Her words left York speechless with frustration. His chest heaved as he slowed his speech to remind her, "I told you after the press conference that we had to go back to Ferguson Mansion tonight."
Claudia let out a soft "Oh." "You said that, but I never agreed."
York's deep eyes were fixed on Claudia, watching her reaction. "Then why did you hang up when I called you?"
"I probably hit the button by accident," she replied.
Her tone couldn't have been more dismissive.
She walked right up to him and looked up into his eyes.
She asked him, "You know we're husband and wife? Then when you lied to me, when you spent your days and nights with the woman you love and her child, why didn't you remember we were husband and wife?"
She continued, "When you hurt me time and again for her sake, why didn't you consider my feelings?"
"I was just out late," Claudia said. "It's not like I was out with some other man. Do you have to make such a big deal out of it?"
They stood in a standoff.
York's lips were pressed into a thin line, his eyes locked on her.
After a long, tense silence, York finally spoke. "So, you leaked my relationship with Ethan to the press and then told Ann to bring him to the conference. You wanted to expose my connection to them completely?"
Claudia wasn't surprised that he knew.
She admitted it freely. "Yes, I schemed against you. Too bad it didn't work. I'll learn my lesson and be more careful next time."
