That evening, York returned to the Ferguson Mansion after receiving a personal call from his grandfather.

Darleen was still sulking. "Brother, I thought you'd disowned your entire family for that woman. What are you doing back here?"

"Darleen, you're getting more and more out of line. Is that any way to speak to me?" York scolded, his face hardening.

Darleen flinched and hid behind the butler.

Wendy stood up. "You were ready to disown me, your own mother. Why would your sister matter to you?"

York felt a headache coming on. "Mom, can you please not interfere in my personal life?"

He continued, "Ann is Ethan's mother. You lowered yourself to hit her in public. What if a reporter had seen it?"

"It would have been for the best," Wendy said, her face grim. "That way, Claudia could finally escape this misery sooner."

York looked down, falling silent.

Sewell reprimanded Wendy. "Women are so short-sighted. Did you even consider your son's future or the future of the Ferguson family when you caused such a scene?"

Sewell continued, "York is the heir to the Ferguson family. He must prioritize the family's interests in all matters. He was right not to let his emotions dictate his actions. York gave her a chance, but she's the one who insisted on leaving. Do you expect him to get on his knees and beg her to stay?"

Wendy was left speechless with anger.

Old Mr. Ferguson then snapped at her, "You're the matriarch of the Ferguson family, yet you're hitting people out on the street. What has happened to this family's dignity?"

York, wrapped in a dark robe, was drinking with Peter on the outdoor terrace.

"Things have already gotten this bad," Peter said, trying to reason with him. "Just divorce Claudia, marry Ann, and everyone will be happy."

York leaned against the railing, his brow furrowed. "If my grandfather hadn't persecuted Ann six years ago, she wouldn't be so cautious now. She asked me to hide Ethan's identity because she just wanted to protect her child. She's a mother. I can understand that."

Beyond that, Ann had never made any unreasonable demands. Even when she had moved into his marital home with her child, it was only because she felt pressured by Claudia and followed her arrangements so that Ethan could have a father. When she realized her mistake, she apologized immediately. Since then, she had maintained a respectful distance and never crossed any lines. Now, she was even trying to be self-sufficient, preferring to rent a place and work as an influencer rather than accept his help. She was doing it all to avoid another misunderstanding with Claudia that might lead to a divorce.

Peter was exasperated. "York, if one or two people don't like her, maybe it's their fault. But why does everyone dislike her?"

"Because you all like Claudia," York retorted. "You assume Ann came back with impure motives, so you're biased against her."
