Ann greeted Peter, who turned away to pluck leaves from a tree, pretending not to hear.
Ann felt a pang of embarrassment.
Seeing the movers bustling around the yard, she cautiously approached York. "York, what are they... ?"
"What are you doing here?" York asked, deflecting her question.
Ann glanced at Peter, hesitating.
"I'll leave you two to talk," Peter said. He had no fondness for Ann and promptly walked away.
York instructed the butler, "Mr. Quinn, let's leave the rest for tomorrow."
Mr. Quinn tactfully led the movers away, while Mark went to wait for York in the car.
Once they were alone, York and Ann went inside.
Only then did Ann speak. "York, your mother came to see me at lunchtime today."
York stood by the French doors, dressed in black trousers, a white shirt, and black sleeve garters, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his strong forearms.
His hands were shoved in his pockets, his gaze fixed on a scorched patch of earth in the garden, lost in thought.
Seeing his lack of reaction, Ann hesitated.
She tested the waters. "York, your mother kicked Ethan and me out of the apartment. She also threatened me, saying that if you and your wife get divorced, she won't let me off the hook. York, what should I do now?"
York turned around, his tone neutral. "Don't worry. My wife and I are not getting divorced. My mother can't threaten you."
Ann stared at York, then suddenly went limp, collapsing onto the sofa.
She had thought that with Claudia out of the country, her chance had finally come.
She never imagined York would try to pay her off and make her leave Capital City.
Before she could even speak, she began to cry. "York, I was separated from my family for six years for you. I just got back. Do you really have the heart to make me leave my family again?"
"You could convince your family to leave with you," York added. "I'll guarantee that you'll all be financially secure for the rest of your lives, and even the next."
Ann shot to her feet.
But her tone was still soft. "York, I was sick for so long I couldn't work, so I admit I accepted your help. But once I'm better, I'll find a job. I never wanted your money, and I never wanted to destroy your marriage. Please, don't be so cruel to me."
