To Tristan’s surprise, Emily Blair only snapped at him once, then fell silent. He arched an eyebrow. “That’s it? You’re not going to yell at me a little more?”
Emily shot him a glare, clearly unimpressed. “And what good would that do?”
He suspected that even if he had to do it all over again—knowing full well Emily would curse him out—he still wouldn’t have changed anything.
Besides, she was the one who’d said, in no uncertain terms, that Andrew Lane’s gifts should be sent off to someone else. If you wanted to point fingers, she was the real culprit here.
Tristan grinned, that cheeky, lopsided smile of his. “Emily, if you keep going easy on me like this, I’m going to get cocky.”
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t push your luck. Just pack up these boxes, will you?”
He gave a pleased little hum and got to his feet, gathering up the packages. But the moment his back was to Emily, the smile slipped from his lips.
He couldn’t help it—he wanted to know how Andrew Lane had figured out that he and Emily weren’t really together. He wanted to ask Emily what she’d told Andrew, but he was terrified the answer would only confirm what he feared: that she’d told Andrew herself.
Poor Tristan; the question twisted inside him until it felt like his insides were tangled in knots, but he still couldn’t bring himself to ask. He just swallowed it down.
Meanwhile, Emily, stretched out on the bed, had her mind on something else entirely.
She’d seen Alex White just yesterday. He was recovering a little faster than she was—walking on his own, able to make it down the hallway to her room, which was only a few doors away.
When they’d met, there was an unspoken sense of solidarity between them, an understanding born of shared misfortune. Alex, who used to be cold and distant before the accident, was strangely gentler now.
The first thing he said when he walked in was, “I haven’t told Isabella about the accident. I’ve made sure everyone around me keeps quiet, too.”
Emily raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to go on.
