Alex White sat hunched over her notebook, jotting something down with a blank, almost icy expression. She didn’t so much as glance up, let alone join the conversation between Emily Blair and the director. It was as if she was in a world of her own.

It wasn’t until she sensed Emily looking her way that Alex snapped the cap onto her pen and finally looked up, her gaze as cold as ever.

Their eyes met for less than a heartbeat before Alex looked away and, out of nowhere, cut off the director mid-sentence. “Excuse me, Dr. Bennett.”

The director, Dr. Bennett, seemed surprised by the interruption, but didn’t look angry. “Yes, Alex? What is it?”

Alex mustered a polite smile. “I have something I need to take care of, so I’ll head out first.”

“Alright, go ahead.”

Alex nodded formally, but as soon as she turned away, her face returned to its usual blank mask. She strode right past Emily without a word.

Emily let out a barely audible sigh.

“You still with me?” Dr. Bennett waved a hand in front of her face.

Emily snapped back to attention. “Yes, sorry. Please go on.”

After they left the ward, Tristan Davis threw an arm around her shoulders. “So, what’s the deal with you and Alex White?”

Emily scrolled through her phone, feigning nonchalance. “What do you mean?”

Tristan grinned. “I’ve never seen her act so frosty toward another woman.”

Emily arched an eyebrow. “So what?”

“What did she do to you? Just tell me and I’ll set her straight.”

Tristan’s voice was light, almost teasing, but there was a sincerity behind it that made Emily pause. She glanced up at him.

Tristan’s expression was as carefree as ever, his eyebrow cocked in that signature, devil-may-care way. Emily felt a tangle of emotions she couldn’t quite name.

She knew Tristan and Alex had grown up together, so she’d half-expected him to ask what she’d done to get on Alex’s bad side—not the other way around.

Emily pressed her lips together and said, “Maybe you two aren’t as close as you think.”

Tristan looked amused. “Oh? Why do you say that?”
