Rhody spun around with a bit of exasperation, saying, “Get back to your coding!” This was clearly something he’d have to tackle himself. He took a deep breath and stepped out of the tech department, trying to psych himself up for what lay ahead. What would he say when he faced Mr. Oliver? He couldn’t just blurt out questions about his identity, right? No, that definitely wouldn’t work. He’d start by reporting the hacker incident.
As he strolled past the conference room, the door swung open, and Oliver emerged. Rhody nearly froze, feeling like his legs were about to give way.
“Uh... Mr. Oliver!” Rhody stammered, attempting a grin that came off as awkward, especially for someone nearing forty. It was the kind of smile that didn’t quite land right.
George, who was accompanying Oliver, immediately stepped in front of him, like a bodyguard shielding against some impending awkwardness from Rhody.
“Jimmy, have you lost it?” George asked, sounding genuinely puzzled.
Rhody scratched his head awkwardly, briefly forgetting about his baldness. “Mr. Oliver, here’s the thing. Our company’s firewall got hacked, but thanks to your brilliant skills, everything’s sorted out.”
Oliver looked baffled. “What are you talking about?”
George echoed, “Seriously, what’s going on?”
“Jimmy, you’re not making any sense. Mr. Oliver has been in meetings for the past thirty-five minutes.”
Rhody’s mind was racing. “Wait, what? Mr. Oliver isn’t K? The timing just doesn’t add up!”
With this realization, the admiration in Rhody’s eyes for Oliver faded a bit.
Oliver, meanwhile, was thinking about his incredibly talented wife.
As Oliver headed to his office, Jimmy tried to tag along, but George stopped him. “Jimmy, today’s not the day to intrude. Mrs. Oliver’s here. You don’t want to be a third wheel, do you? Even if your head’s shiny, that doesn’t mean you should make it obvious.”
Jimmy was taken aback. “George, you mean Mrs. Oliver is here?”
