I stood near the staircase, half hidden in the shadows, pretending I wasn’t eavesdropping even though I kind of was.

They’d only just stepped into Blake’s pack house and already the place felt smaller, like all the walls had squeezed in a little.

A couple of Blake’s wolves stepped forward, taking their bags from them like esteemed guests. They were led to bedrooms that had already been decided, with a guy and a girl staying in one, two guys staying in another, and Lia and Zane in the last.

My palms were clammy with sweat.

I couldn’t stop reminding myself how I’d tried to kill them. Not once. Not accidentally. I’d done it with intent. And now here they were, walking under the same roof as me, breathing the

same air.

And I didn’t feel hatred anymore.

I imagined Lia’s expression if she brought it up now, if she reminded everyone what I’d done, and my stomach flipped. I deserved whatever came.

But then she turned her head, and our eyes met.

I froze. My first instinct was to bolt up the steps, pretend I hadn’t seen her, hide in my room until morning. But that would look worse. So I stayed put, chin up like I wasn’t shaking inside.

She started walking over. Not fast. Just steady. Zane lingered back by their door, watching but not interfering. The closer she got, the smaller she seemed. Tired. Absolutely exhausted. Like she’d run through a storm and had been struck by lightning.

need anything?” she asked me, the calmness of her tone surprising me. There was no sharp edge to it. Like she didn’t even remember what I’d done on the night of the Blood Moon. “Are you in trouble with Blake?” she whispered, eyes darting around to make sure no one heard.

My heart squeezed in my chest.

After all I’d done, she was worried about me. About whether he was treating me correctly.

Because of what he’d done to her.

She was afraid if he was hurting me like he hurt her with the Order’s help.

I blinked at her, caught off guard. “No. I’m safe,” I said, though the words sounded weird even to me. Still, it was true. Blake could be controlling, sure, but he wasn’t cruel. Not to me, at least.

away.

Laugh you could hear from the kitchen, even with the door shut. Then one day—gone. The silence after… it gets in your bones.” My throat tightened. “So I get it. A little. Family wounds hurt the most.”

Something in her expression shifted then. Not pity. Just understanding, like she immediately forgave me for what I’d

done.

“Thank you,” she said softly. “For telling me.”

killed Zane. They destroyed lives. They hurt you.” My throat tightened but I forced the words out. “Why didn’t you make them pay?”

She looked at me, her expression unreadable. “Because kindness is always stronger than cruelty. I’m not a monster, no matter what the myths or books say. I’m never gonna use my powers for evil. That’s not who I am.”

The words struck harder than I expected.

Cracked something inside me I hadn’t even known was frozen.

I’d always thought strength meant fire, steel, blood.

But she said it like it was obvious. Like it was the only thing that mattered.

I couldn’t answer. Couldn’t argue

She touched my arm, gave it a quick squeeze, and then walked down the hall to her room like nothing more needed to be said. And I just stood there, heart thundering in my chest, realising I’d been wrong about her from the start.
