I sat on the edge of the sofa, twisting my fingers together while Warner leaned forward in his chair, his eyes narrowing on Sapphire.

“Why are you refusing?” he asked gently, his tone more curious than accusing.

Sapphire crossed her arms, leaning back as though to shield herself from the weight of everyone’s pointed stares. “Because I don’t want to get involved in werewolf problems so directly. The tension hung thick in the air. I hated it—the way Sapphire’s jaw was set, the way Zane looked like he was about to argue again. Maybe even play his Alpha card.

The room filled with the sounds of my cries, and if I were being honest, I wasn’t embarrassed.
