Selene’s eyes stayed on me, sharp and unreadable, and my mind scrambled for something—anything—that would sound normal enough to get me out of this. I forced a weak smile and shifted my weight, pretending like I had everything under control.

“I was just… going to pick up my books,” I said quickly, my voice steadier than I actually felt. “But I needed something else first.”

Her head tilted slightly, curious. “Something else? What would that be?”

My throat went dry. For half a second, I thought about saying nothing and bolting out the door, but that would be worse. She’d

know.

I swallowed hard, took a shaky breath, and then the words tumbled out before I could stop them.

Her eyebrow shot up, eyes narrowing slightly.

I kept stringing words together, turning my explanation into a messy rant. “I mean, can you imagine Dad finding it? He’d probably have a heart attack. And then you’d both lecture me for hours and I just—no. No, thank you. So yeah, that’s why I needed to go upstairs first. Not because I was hiding something else. Just that.”

For a moment, the silence nearly killed me. My heart hammered so hard I was sure she could hear it. But then she started to laugh—a soft, easy laugh that made my shoulders loosen just fraction.

“Oh, Lia,” she said, shaking her head with a smile. “I’m glad you decided to wait. It’s not something to rush. But thank you for being honest. It’s really okay.”

Her reassurance almost made me choke

Relief and nerves twisted together in my stomach, an odd mix, but I found the courage to step forward and wrap my arms around her. Her body was warm, comforting in that familiar way, and for a second I hated how much I wanted it to be real.

My Mom was somewhere else. Unsafe. In trouble.

Through the window, I saw her standing at the doorway, smiling as she waved.

Sapphire sat cross–legged on the rug, the bracelet cupped in both hands. It looked small against her fingers, like it didn’t belong there, and my stomach twisted into a tight knot.

I sat on the edge of the nearest chair, my hands fisted together in my lap. In spite of Zane sitting beside me, my heart wouldn’t slow down.

Every time Sapphire muttered under her breath, that vision slammed back into my head—Mom chained to a wall, the stone dripping with shadows that seemed alive. Her face pale. Her eyes dull. I pressed my nails into my palms, trying to hold myself together.

Zane slipped his hand into mine, lacing our fingers.

Sparks shot through my arm, and I released a trembling breath.

Then Sapphire gasped. The glow flared and her eyes snapped open, brighter than usual, like the magic had set them alight from the inside. She let the bracelet drop back into the plastic box and exhaled slowly.

“Yes. Your mom’s okay. Physically, at least. But Selene’s used cloaking magic,” Sapphire said, standing up from the ground. “Even if you reached the place, you wouldn’t be able to see her. Not without a witch to drop the cloak.”

The room went silent for a beat. Then Warner leaned forward even more, his voice rough. “So you’ll come with us, right?”

Sapphire met his gaze, steady and unflinching.

“No. I will not.”
