Rohan remained unconscious far longer than anyone had expected. He remained sleeping for three days without even moving to change his position. It scared Belle every time she walked into the room and saw him lying so still that she would rush to his side and slip a finger under his nose to see if he was breathing; only after feeling the warm air did she feel assured he was asleep.
She took care of him, wiping his body and dressing him in a long, loose nightshirt she found in the wardrobe with Angel’s help. For some reason, his tousled, untamed long hair bothered her, as she felt it didn’t look right on him. As much as she didn’t hold memories, she still felt that wasn’t his natural hairstyle, and she made a mental note to deal with it once he regained consciousness.
Belle got reacquainted with everything in the cottage and cleaned the other places Rohan hadn’t managed to tidy before he fell. Many times she found herself wondering how she had fallen ill in the first place, ill enough to lose every memory. Had she even been ill at all? Her father-in-law had said Rohan got hurt trying to save her, which meant there was more to why she couldn’t remember anything.
Belle set her thoughts aside and focused on the more pressing things at hand. Since she didn’t have milk in her, she went down to the barn in their yard every day to collect milk from the nice men working there, but the baby surprisingly always refused to take more than two sips before moving her mouth away and crying, as if the taste wasn’t right for her.
Belle was beginning to think she was sick when Angel came to her and took the milk cup. "Mama, Rosey will not take it if you don’t put blood into it," he said, bringing out the small bottle of blood he carried in his pocket for emergencies and then emptying it into the milk, all the while Belle watched with widened eyes.
Angel mixed it well and then brought the cup to Roseline’s mouth. Belle quickly reached out to stop him, but before she could, her daughter hungrily lifted her head, latched onto the cup, and began to drink.
Actually, for the past three days, while she took care of Rohan and the children, she had discovered books in the living room’s book cabinet that contained interesting information about their world. She had learned about vampires, creatures who take blood. Furthermore, she had seen in the small mirror in their room the bite marks on the swell of her breast where Rohan had bitten her when she had held him, and it had made her begin to hold a little bit of doubt about what her husband truly was. Now, as Roseline took the blood-milk from her brother’s hand and Angel licked at the back of his finger where a drop of the blood-milk had fallen, Belle’s suspicions were confirmed.
Everything made sense to Belle. She slowly digested the fact that they were vampires, and yet it did nothing to faze her or scare her the way she thought it would when she had read about it just yesterday.
She had married Rohan and stayed with him for two years, and they had two children; she must have known what he was and had still chosen to stay with him. Hence, this new information didn’t change anything inside her the way it might have otherwise. In fact, she found herself holding the cup properly to the hungry baby’s mouth, smiling down at her son, who was beaming at her.
"Rosey likes milk with blood. Next time, tell me, and I will bring the blood," Angel told her, putting his emergency bottle back into his coat to be refiled later when his father wakes up.
She finished feeding Roseline and was preparing to bathe her when Angel, who had gone upstairs to keep somethings for his mother, came running back, yelling, "Mama, Papa is waking up!"
Belle felt her heart skip a beat. She had waited and hoped for him to wake for three days, but there had been no sign at all. Now, hearing this, she felt herself suddenly becoming nervous. How was she going to face him after the way she had pushed him in the kitchen?
Belle took a deep breath, then turned and handed Roseline to Angel, telling him to stay while she went to check on their father, so they wouldn’t crowd the room and overwhelm him when he had just woken up. Furthermore, she needed to sort out her feelings about him without their children present.
"Be careful, Mama. Papa must be hungry by now," Angel warned, and Belle almost wanted to fetch the porridge she had made that morning, but then realized he didn’t mean food hungry, he meant blood hungry.
"I will," she said, giving him a tender pat on the head before rushing up the narrow steps into their room. Immediately she entered, she found Rohan attempting to sit up, wincing in discomfort as he groaned and held his head tightly, clearly in pain.
"You’re finally awake," Belle said softly as she approached him, but he didn’t turn his head to look at her, keeping it averted as he kept grabbing it. "Rohan?" she asked, moving to sit beside him and gently placing her hand against his heated shoulder. Her touch made him jerk his head to look at her.
