"Why are you digging so deep? He’s already in so much pain!" Belle exclaimed, her heart breaking as she watched the horrifying sight of the blade disappearing even further into his back. Rohan’s cries and ragged groans tore at something inside her, making her hold him even closer and wish for everything to be over quickly.
Ereves, focused on what he was doing, answered her without taking his eyes off the wound. "Because it’s not a normal bullet. It’s a kind used to kill certain creatures, and it’s meant to melt the flesh and move deeper. It has been left far too long inside him, so it has gone too deep." He explained this just as the tip of the knife finally touched the bullet.
"I found it," Ereves smirked as he dug out the bullet that had prevented Rohan from healing. Rohan let out a loud groan, unable to help it, and bit into Belle’s flesh as he clung to her like a lifeline through the pain.
Belle felt the sharp sting of his teeth sinking into her chest. It felt like a pin going into her skin, and the pain almost made her pull back, but she didn’t, she held still. Did he have needles in his mouth for the bite to feel this painful? Belle wondered, unable to see but feeling him sucking at the spot he had bitten. It was like an infant sucking milk from its mother’s breast, and she wondered what her husband was sucking from her skin, licking and biting again.
Belle bore it all and kept holding him, rubbing the back of his neck as she watched the bullet finally fall to the rug with a thud.
It was thick and black and scorching hot when Ereves picked it up. It was supposed to be silver in color, but it had absorbed so much of Rohan’s energy. Had he been only a vampire, he would have burned into dust, but luckily he had a demon king’s blood in his veins, Ereves thought proudly as he turned his attention to another bullet wound.
By the time everything was over, Belle had lost count of how many times Rohan bit or nibbled at her, though he tried to restrain himself, often just licking the spot instead. Her hands never left him, stroking, holding, and comforting him.
"It’s over, Rohan. It’s over," Belle whispered soothingly into his ear, pressing her lips to his earlobe as his body didn’t stop shuddering from the pain.
Ereves, on the other hand, noticed how the wound wasn’t closing up immediately and realized it would take some time for it to close, as the bullet must have damaged some of the tissue that made him heal fast. Ereves cleaned the wounds that looked less inflamed and then said,
"He needs to take a lot of rest, no moving around until those wounds close, or he will damage his body more," Ereves informed her as he moved to stand to his feet, looking down at the two embracing each other, with Rohan holding tightly to her even though he had fallen back into unconsciousness.
Belle, still rubbing his hair and neck, looked up at Ereves. "I will make sure he gets the rest he needs," she said, and then, unable to hold back the burning curiosity, she asked, "How did he get this badly injured?"
Ereves shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. "He got them saving your life."
Belle’s brows pulled together into a deep frown. "Saving my life? How?"
"How about you ask him when he regains consciousness?" he suggested with an unbothered look. "My job here is done for now." He hated how his powers became less in the mortal world and didn’t like to spend too much time in it, lest it turned him into someone like his offspring. The mortal world was no place for a demon to stay in for long.
"Where are you going to?" Belle asked, wondering where he lived and why it seemed like he wasn’t in a good relationship with Rohan and Angel.
"Home," Ereves said over his shoulder as he walked toward the door.
"Wait," Belle called, causing him to stop. "I need to get him upstairs to our room to lie on the bed. I need your help to lift him."
Ereves, who was eager to leave and avoid staying any longer than he had already, turned on his heels back toward her.
Belle tried to move back but realized Rohan’s death grip hadn’t loosened even though he had fallen back into unconsciousness. She looked up at Ereves for help, and he quietly went behind her to pry Rohan’s hand from her waist. But the way Rohan held the girl, with his fingers flattened possessively at the small of her back, made Ereves realize yet again that no force on this earth would ever make his offspring give up the love he held for this human or make him return home.
