Chapter 483: The search for wife

In no time, words had gotten out about the humans’ invasion into the vampire land. The words spread around faster than the wind. They had entered from where none of the vampires had expected them to enter.

Nightbrook has two borders where travelers come and go, one in the south and another in the east, and those were the entry ways into the vampire land, while the other border located in the west was a no-way into the land because it had mountains, rivers, and forests forming the natural boundaries. However, the humans had somehow found their way into the vampire land through that side of the border that had no soldiers protecting it, as the vampires believed humans couldn’t invade through there.

Hearing that the humans had built big weapons with guns that held bullets capable of killing vampires sent every single vampire in Nightbrook into panic, and the vampire soldiers began preparing to protect their lands, hurrying to the location of the invasion. It was closer to the biggest establishment built and hidden in the forest part of the unused border, a place not everyone even knew about, as they did not sell blood there but only kept pregnant slaves and delivered their babies to the establishments built in the cities and towns.

While the soldiers and Gaggers were preparing for the battle of the century between humans and vampires, Rohan was scouring every corner of the land, searching every establishment and secluded property that belonged to Cordelia. But none of them held his wife. He even stopped the wagons carrying slaves out to safe places, but none of the wagons had her in them.

It was a custom of establishment owners to send their source of food to safety when a war would happen, as when it ended, Nightbrook wouldn’t want to start from the beginning where they had no humans to take blood from. Thus, whenever any chaos was starting, every slave was carried out of the establishments and taken into a safe place built underground.

He went to every establishment and stopped their wagon processions on the roads to search through the people. Angry at not finding her, Rohan killed every single vampire taking the slaves’ wagons to a safe house and then released the terrified humans inside the vehicles.

"If you all want to live, run towards your kind and seek protection." Saying that, he flew into the sky again without waiting to see if they did as he told them or were too scared to fight to live. Rohan did this on repeat, but he never did find his wife in any of the processions.

He even began to doubt if Cordelia had put her in an establishment in the first place because he had checked every single one he knew of in Nightbrook.

Time was running out. He could sense the chaos approaching Nightbrook with each passing hour, and with each passing hour, his wife’s time to take back souls was running out, and so was Rav’s possibility of being saved. Thinking about what condition she must be in did nothing but make him restless. If only the mark they shared was that powerful, he would have tracked her in a blink.

But just like that bastard demon had said, he couldn’t leave a permanent mark on a person living on a borrowed life. Not until Belle finished fixing what had ruined the orders of the land of the dead; she couldn’t hold a permanent mark that would bind them together forever. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

It seemed he would have to torture Cordelia more in order to get his answers straight from her. With that thought, Rohan made his way back to the castle to check on his son and also deal with Cordelia. He could find Belle fast if he agreed to the demon king, but giving away his son was not an option.

He couldn’t think of giving away his boy. Doing that would not only make him regret it for life, but his wife would come to hate him for it. Belle would never approve of giving away their son in order to find her. Hence, he didn’t even let the selfish part of his mind that had been playing with the idea since the time the demon king planted it in his head consider it.

From what he knew, this set of souls Belle was meant to carry next were not the harder puzzles that needed to be taken at that particular given time like the witches they had killed. From what she had explained to him, she had approximately three months left to finish taking back every single soul on her list, with a few in the list that must be taken at a particular given time. But the ones she missed yesterday were not the harder puzzles, which meant she still had some more time. He only hoped Cordelia had not done something stupid to his wife, for her stupidity would cost her worse than her life.

Rohan returned to the castle, and immediately he entered, he sensed something amiss in the air. He made his way straight to Angel’s room, and there he found Evenly standing with her back pressed to the door and her palm pressed to her mouth, her face pale like she had seen a ghost.

"What’s wrong?" came Rohan’s voice, with his brows pulled together as he walked towards the door.

Evenly, who had been standing there since she had noticed what was happening inside Angel’s room, turned to look at the duke. "It’s Angel..." she whispered dreadfully.
