Chapter 482: The reaper’s help

"It’s the witch," Kevin replied, stepping back slightly from Belle. "She’s in labor. What do I do with her?" he asked nervously, glancing toward Belle and Andrea, who was now holding Belle’s arm tightly to keep her steady.

Hearing who was in labor, the other vampire didn’t even hesitate to say, "Pull her outside and let her give birth. There’s no next wagon after this, and we’ll have to wait for them to drop the slaves and return. We still have time to get the bitch to have her brat." If it weren’t for the fact that Master Kent had given a clear order to keep her alive, at this time of urgency it would have been better to shoot the witch dead.

"Stay close to me, Andrea. Don’t get on any of the wagons," Belle whispered to the other woman as the vampire began to separate their chains. But before Andrea could even reply, the vampire named Kelvin moved to pull Belle away from the line.

"Let’s go," he said, yanking her forward.

"Wait! I need her by my side. I can’t do this alone," Belle said quickly, turning to pull Andrea with her. The vampire opened and closed his mouth as if wanting to object, but realizing there were no more wagons and the slaves would just be standing idly outside without doing anything, he reluctantly allowed Belle to pull Andrea along.

When they stepped outside, Belle felt the curious eyes of many slaves watching as they were dragged in the opposite direction of the big yard. The vampire led them toward a massive tree. "You can give birth here," he said, gesturing toward the tree that had low branches and a thick shade. He said it as if giving birth were as simple as relieving oneself, as though she could just do it beneath the tree where the cold wind blew with enough force to make the air beneath it almost freezing.

"Make sure to keep quiet while at it. And make it fast, or you’ll be dragged away with a half-born baby into the next arriving wagon."

The vampire didn’t even wait to hear if the spot was suitable or not for childbirth. He turned away, walked a short distance, and sat himself on a wooden bench a few feet away, pulling a cigar from his pocket. He began to smoke with his back to them, his indifference about her labor clear.

Belle knew she had no choice here, and the next contraction gave her no chance to prolong the labor even if she wanted to use this as an opportunity to find a way out of this place. She moaned as the pain hit her hard, gripping Andrea’s supporting arm with such force that the other woman grimaced in pain but didn’t pull away.

"You need to sit down. Here, let me help you take off your coat. We can use it to receive the baby," Andrea said as she moved to help Belle remove the black coat she always wore and hugged at night. But Belle stopped her.

"Wait. I need to move around a bit. The contractions aren’t the hard ones yet," Belle murmured, her eyes scanning the large yard filled with reapers, searching for a familiar one among them, as many were newly transitioned reapers. No doubt there were all sent here to take back their first souls as death was stronger here. Hence, it wouldn’t be so farfetched if Kuhn was part of them.

Andrea, who knew how labor worked more than anyone, nodded her head but then cautioned, "We don’t have much time. The war is indeed real. I’ve never seen this many birds in the sky before." She bent to look at the gray clouds through the low branches of the tree, where flocks of birds were flying away in frantic swarms.

"They’re all flying toward the east, which means the chaos is coming from the west. How do you feel now?" Andrea asked as she walked with Belle, slowly circling the big tree to hasten the process.

"Fine..." Belle breathed with strain, though her mind wandered to her family at the thought of the war. If the war had already begun, it meant even they wouldn’t be safe unless they found shelter and leave the land. She trusted Rohan to protect their family, but they would be leaving without her if he hadn’t yet figured out he was living with a fake...

Belle’s thoughts trailed off as a reaper suddenly appeared in front of them, making her stop in her tracks. She stared at the tall, cloaked creature with a scythe in hand. She didn’t need to read his aura to know it was Kuhn. Though she was in pain, a sigh of relief escaped her lips upon seeing the creature.

"Andrea, can you do me a favor and pull up some leaves over at the corner where I’ll lie down?" she said to the other woman, hoping to distract her so she wouldn’t wonder who Belle was talking to if she started talking to Kuhn.

Andrea nodded and left, saying over her shoulder, "Keep moving while I prepare the place." As much as Andrea no longer cared about children born for the establishment, she knew her cellmate’s unborn child was not a baby conceived of shame. It needed to be handled with care during birth so it wouldn’t be born a stillborn, the way she always prayed hers would be born.
