Lisa couldn't help but shiver. It seemed she had arrived too early, and it was probably best to leave now rather than interrupt the intimate moment inside the ward.
She didn't want to hear any more, so she quickly turned around. In her haste, her leg accidentally bumped into a nearby bench. The pain was real, and the noise she made was loud enough to alert me and Brandon.
His face grew even more flustered at my teasing. Seeing him like this and hearing the commotion outside, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.
My laughter, however, caused the wound on my lower body to hurt, and I let out a pained cry. He instantly tensed up. "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"
Lisa, startled by my cry, quickly ran in. "What happened?"
I grasped Brandon's arm tightly, trying to explain my pain. "I laughed too hard and pulled my stitches."
She shot me a disapproving glare. "You're a mother now, yet you're behaving like a kid. Don't you know your limits?"
She was making a double entendre, and both of us understood. We exchanged a glance, and both of us couldn't help but giggle.
Brandon, aware that Lisa had overheard our conversation earlier, felt awkward. However, he was still more concerned about me. He asked Lisa, "Is she okay like this? Do you think she should get checked?"
"Let me take a look," she said. She reached for a pair of disposable gloves from a nearby medical supply shelf.
This time, Brandon didn't leave, but Lisa reminded him. "Mr. Howell, shouldn't you step aside for a moment?"
He looked at me, concern etched on his face, but I felt embarrassed and suggested, "Go pour out the water. I feel perfectly fine, so I don't think I need to get checked."
"We should still check," Brandon said before leaving with the items I had cleaned.
Lisa finished checking me, then tossed her gloves into the medical waste bin. As she did, she muttered, "What's so great about it?"
She was someone who had been there and done that, but ever since her split with Keith, she had probably been in a dry spell. I nudged her coat with my foot. "That's because you haven't had any in so long."
She stepped back. "Don't touch me. This is sterile."
I brought up Logan. "Logan seems to care about you a lot."
"That's because your husband, Brandon, gave him a task. Suddenly, I feel like we owe you two—spending our Christmas here, and on top of that, I have to put up with your nonsense," she scolded while picking up Merry.
It's funny how Lisa ended up holding Merry more than I have since her birth. I only got to hold her for a few minutes before Brandon took over, worried that I'd get tired.
