I didn't know why I was crying. I felt this overwhelming sense of grievance.
"You little princess, 7.05 pounds. Here you go! Give Mommy a kiss," Lisa said, holding the baby and pressing her gently against my cheek. At that moment, I broke down and cried even harder.
"Look at you—getting all emotional," she teased, handing the baby over to the nurse for a bath. She then started helping me clean up the mess on the bed.
"Lisa, take care of Mae for a bit. I'll be right back." Brandon suddenly got up and left me.
Even though he couldn't do much here, leaving before I was fully cleaned up seemed rather hurried.
"Oh, so now that you have a daughter, you're just going to abandon your wife?" Lisa joked.
He didn't explain himself, just gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. "I'll be right back."
"Get her some food," Lisa reminded him.
After leaving the delivery room, Brandon went to the baby bathing area. As soon as he arrived, he spotted two familiar faces gathered around the newborn.
"She takes after the Howell family. Look at that nose—it is a perfect replica of Brandon's."
"Oh, the nose might be like yours. But those eyes and that little mouth—that's pure Emorde family genes."
Brandon leaned against the wall, watching the two old men bicker back and forth. It went on until the nurse said, "Excuse me, gentlemen. I need to give the baby a bath. You can come back to see her later."
"Let's take another look. Or we won't get the chance once Brandon comes out..." The two old men were still trying to get a glimpse.
At this moment, Brandon coughed, and they immediately turned around. Upon seeing him, the young nurse quickly carried the baby into the washroom.
"What are you doing out here? You should be in there with my granddaughter." Remy tried to sound stern after a brief moment of awkwardness.
Not to be outdone, Remy immediately took out a bag with the word "Gold" printed on it.
Though Brandon didn't like them, he had no qualms about accepting their gifts. "Consider these gifts for sneaking a peek at my daughter just now."
"I'll give her an even bigger one during her one-month celebration," Micah promised.
Remy quickly chimed in, "Yes, and not just for the baby, but for Madeline too."
"Of course, my granddaughter-in-law deserves a big reward. She gave the Howells such a beautiful little princess," Micah said generously.
"Big, huh? How big, Micah? Don't just talk big. Madeline has been married to your boy for so long—what have you given her?" Remy started keeping score.
"We've offered, but she didn't want them. What can I do?" Micah said, glancing at Brandon. "You can ask him."
